I need to build a server for a large format printer, and since I don't generally do server builds, I'm looking for some guidance... mainly on the processor, motherboard, and memory side.

Here are the specs I was given:

OS: Windows 7 Pro (64bit)
CPU: 3.33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” (preferably more processor cores),
RAM: 8GB RAM,
Hard Drive(s): 1.5 TB 3 GBit/Sec. Serial-ATA with 7200 rpm or more. Ideally 4 hard drives, minimum 2 hard drives, should be routed via “Server File Maintenance” in the Fiery XF Client as follows: 1 connected via SATA for the job folder, 1 connected via SATA for temporary files, 2 connected via Raid 0 for the output folder.

So basically, those are the minimums I am working with. I just want a build that fits these requirements without me making any dumb mistakes since I generally just build desktops :D

What kind of printer and what software is going to be used with it?

Well I already ordered the parts... It has to be ready Tuesday. It is for a 64" wide format printer. The RIP will be running Fiery XF server.

What parts did you order?

Well I had a really hard time deciding since the system specs really aren't that clear (the list I was given was generic, not specific to our application). Here is what I ended up with... hopefully it all goes together:

Intel i7-4820K LGA 2011 64 Technology Extended Memory CPU Processors BX80633I74820K
ASUS Sabertooth X79 LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
2 x 16GB G.Skill DDR3 PC3-14900 RipjawsX Series for Intel Z77/Z68/P67 (10-11-10-30) Dual Channel kit
2 x Western Digital Caviar Black 2 TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Internal Desktop Hard Drive - WD2002FAEX
EVGA GeForce GTX 650 1024MB GDDR5 DVI mHDMI Graphics Card 01G-P4-2650-KR
Corsair Builder Series CX 600 Watt ATX/EPS 80 PLUS (CX600)
Acer G276HL Dbd 27-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor
Logitech Wireless Combo Mk520 With Keyboard and Laser Mouse
Silverstone Tek ATX, Micro-ATX Computer Mid Tower Case Black, (RL01B-USB 3.0)
Samsung Optical Drive SH-224DB/BEBE

Grapics card and monitor should not be critical. I figure I can always add more drives later, but I'm not really sure why we would need 4 x 1.5 TB drives, which is what the specs seem to suggest. Hopefully processor is more than enough despite not being a six core server processor.

Printer that chops up lager?

Haha, should say large format. Just noticed that now.

Looks like a decent machine. I build machines for a small sign shop with a 54" printer, and it's just a workstation, he does the design, rip, and printing from that one machine.

I'm guessing that the company you are building this for has multiple users and the server is dedicated to ripping and printing and no user will be designing on that machine.

Buy an off lease tower server on Ebay, there are lots of cheap LGA1366 Lenovo tower servers.
