Settings for BF2 Running 6800GS

Okay, so I'm pretty noob, but I've been looking around to see what I can do to reduce lag while I play BF2. System Specs as follows:

ABIT IC7
P4 HT 3.0Ghz
1GB PC3200
BFG 6800GS OC
Monitor = Envision VGA LCD

I put the settings on 1024x768 at 60hz with application settings on High.

I've tried upping the rez to 1280x1024 but it lags a bit more.

I'm also playing wirelessly with a 54Mbps wireless card, but never had problems when I used my 9800 pro.

Question: Am I being bottle necked somewhere? Monitor perhaps? Lan Connection? Also what settings would you all recommend to squeeze out the best performance from my vid card?

Suggestions (besides buying new hardware, no budget for a new rig at the moment) and tips please? :confused:
 
Have you unlocked the extra quad in the 6800GS?

Remember, you'll noticed hitching if you're running 1 gig or less of RAM with BF2 on High settings.
 
Well if your having lag due to the card, you could attempt overclocking for a little boost.

This post will guide you through the process. Remember, the extra quad may not function properly. if it doesn't just re-disable it.
 
BF2 is a monster especially with a bigger map on high settings when it comes to RAM and thats what I think is your issue is. I have a 7800GT SLI setup and it stutters once in a while most noticeably for the first 30 secs or so when I load a map and I think its RAM
 
FACT it is the ram. You can play with 1Gig but reduce the settings to medium and u can put AA @ 4x. You can leave resolution at what it is but after u see its ok play with higher then 60 HZ
 
Put your texture to medium. That should go a good ways to helping performance. Fact is BF2 runs easily on many cards, you just have to have the RAM (2GB) in order to max out your video card.
 
also, use a hard line for your internet. you get much lower pings and much better response, and much better upstream and much better downstream, and with wireless you have a pretty good chance of dropping packets if you are a decent distance away and....

yeah, get a cat5e cable, and enjoy faster internet.

also, another gig of ram :)

No, no it wont make a difference when he's gaming unless he is dropping packets, which you'll really know what's going on if that's the case.

Gaming doesnt actually use that much bandwidth, and bandwidth is not directly related to your ping.

Also, most internet connections dont even reach near the speed offered by current day wireless standards, the improved speeds are good for networking, transfering files across the network, not when necessarly sharing the net connection.
 
Thanks for everyone's input. I unlocked "something" using the guide on anandtech. More specifically, that "other thing" other than the pipe. Things are smoother with 1280x1024 at 75hz on high settings. I'll probably invest in more ram, but maybe next month. But I think I'll try dropping the texture setting to medium. Is there any other suggestions or tips with BF2 settings?
 
Ok mate you have been told by someone else "FACT" ram is the problem, i can verify this. you need 2 gig. i had a 7800 GT and still couldnt get it stutter free. also when you exit it takes for ever to close down! i traded my 2 x 512 kingston for 2 x 1024 corsair platinum 3200. i also have 2 x 512 corsair xl pro.this is the best 1 gig kit money can buy, it still jumps!

What drivers are you using? go and google xtweaks, they have some great drivers. download a program called FRAPS, this will tell you your frame rates tru loads of drivers till you find the right one for your card. also look at 3dmark, i would go for 05 with that card. i think you should be scoring late 3000, early 4000. a different driver will change your score by up to 500 points.

That other thing is the vertex shader. Probably more placebo than anything for you, but it could make a small difference.

well...i turned everything back to "normal" or default. But I'm gonna 3dmark done on both default and unlocked so that I can compare. I also ordered 2gb kit corsair xms with 3-3-3-8 timings. With that...will I be able to run everything on high settings with minimal lag at 1280 rez unlocked or default?
 
Why did you return the card to it's default settings? Were the pipes corrupted?

I'd say you shouldn't have too much of an issue playing at high specs with the extra ram.

how do i know if the pipes are currupted?
 
I have a Galaxy 6800GS @ stock right nopw because I forgot to over clock it again because I installed new drivers but with 2 gb on DDR400 ram at 180mhz and a 3200+ @ 2.7ghz I run BF2 at 1280x960 with everything at high, I even force 8xS AA. It runs smoothly on all maps :D

dood, try it. wired will likely always be much better. its the truth. yeah, THEORETICALLY, current internet tech doesn't saturate the THEORETICAL limits of a standard wireless card, but there are reasons why those boosted speed cards are faster when configured properly.
seriously, there are SO MANY things working against a wireless signal that a wired connection simply does not have to worry about.

for agp/pci express users, not sure if all video card users can/should do, aperture size setting in bios, setting it to same as ur video cards ram eg: (128-256mb)

besides running everything on medium, tweak that i read, said medium and highs differences werent all that much, and depending on what Anti-Aliasing u use i suppose, def. try everything on medium with no AA then slowly step up the AA for urself and experiment.

and my monitors settings from windows desktop is set at 100hz with dells 17" crt drivers, and so i set same for in game i select 100hz @1024x768.
 
I just did the 3dMark05. My score without unlocket the Pipes were at 4,500. Unlocked pipes went to 5000. If the score is higher, does that mean its better? Also what drivers do you guys suggest? I'm thinking about the new Z-Tweaked Forceware Driver, but yeah.
 
Hey jez, I have practically the same system as you. When i first benched the game using my 2.8C @ 3.36 and the 6800GS, i got about 4600. When I unlocked the pipes/shader, I jumped to around 5000. My best score of about 5500 came from overclocking to 425/1100 My card actually tops out around here, actually losing some points above these figures (probably excessive heat).

My drivers are the current nvidia drivers, 84.21 i think. I used rivatuner to overclock and unlock

Are you on stock cooling? I decided to put my BF2 settings on medium because it's a lot smoother. Hopefully the extra RAM will make a larger difference during gameplay. I'm thinking about boosting it back up to high settings when the RAM comes in, hopefully it'll be able to handle.

usually you'll notice it fairly immediately. Often times people have strange lines and artifacting in windows when the've unlocked their cards, and sometimes you can notice strange things in long bouts of games. If you don't notice any artifacts though, your pipes are just fine!
 
so i upgraded my memory to 2gb of corsair xms.....game runs smooth on 1280 rez at 75hz with high settings....WAY smooth. So i guess it was just the RAM.

i've got a zalman700 running i'm my system. I don't load above mid 60s anymore. I used to go up to 80s without it. ran me $30 shipped I think. Looks damn cool too.
