setting up windows backup on desktop computer

This person has a WD external hard drive. I think it came with Dantz Retrospect Express at least that is what I found on the WD site that it came with this.
They have no disk or anything....the drive is empty...been sitting there for 2 yrs never knew what it was for LOL
they want to backup some files that they now think are important..3 directories and it comes to about 26 megs of data right now.

They will be adding, deleting and changing to the directories.
If I use windows backup what and how should I set it up to do this type of backup?
What they said was they wanted 3 backups stored on the external, like all files in sub directories ....example 8-4-2006, 8-11-2006, and 8-18-2006 then when its backed up on 8-25-2006 remove 8-4-2006.
I can't see how this can be done but I wanted to ask if this can be done, if not WHAT is the best way to backup these files?

do a google search for a program called syncback. i use it at home and it works very well, they have a free or retail version but i find that the freeware vers does everything i need and then some.. awesome program i think..
