I tried the link in stuff for HTPC but there was a error.

How do I properly set up Directv to my HTPC? I want to be able to record tv on my PC but I still want to watch HDTV on my TV. Right now I have a analog ATI 550 tuner card.
I have not found a answer to my question searching the net. Right now I feel there is not a way, so if there is someone that can shed some light on my question that would be great.

Last time I checked, they used their own special modified and encrypted mpeg2 stream (DSS?). No tuners I know will work with it. Other satellite companies like in the UK use DVB streams that can be tuned with a DVB tuner card. In the states you will be out of luck it seems.

So satilite users are s&%t out of luck you are saying. The only way to record tv is to have cable.

For what you outlined you need two STBs (cable/sat boxes). One to connect directly to the TV and one to connect to the HTPC over analog out. You can only connect the STB to the tuner via svideo but that means you'll only be able to do SD quality content (if it's HD your after going analog out will resize it to 720x480 interlaced).

So yes, screwed on HD (into your HTPC) but not on SD content. The situation is pretty much the same with Cable as well but at least with Cable it's possible to buy a CableCard equipped system but the entry level price for a single CC tuner system is over $1500. For a single CC tuner system.... (sigh)

OK I do not need to record in HD, I just want to watch TV in HD. So it sounds like I can get a HD duel tuner box and hook 1 line to my TV and the other to my HTPC.
