Setting up Bookshelf Speakers for the Computer

I was looking into buying computer speakers until I came across a thread noting that bookshelf speakers are usually better than any computer speaker set can provide. I have 2 JBL bookshelf speakers, as well as 4 additional satellite speakers from older computers speaker sets. How would I go about connecting them to my computer's sound card (Audigy 2 Platinum)? Do I need to buy a stereo receiver? (Digital vs Analong) Do I need to buy any special wires to connect the receiver to the sound card? Any additional recommendations would be helpful.
 
You can buy a receiver, but you will probably want a multi-channel one as opposed to a stereo receiver, since it seems you may want to hook up more than 2 speakers. Something like this would work:

All you need to connect it would be a few mini 1/8" jack to RCA cables.
