Where to begin? That's an open-ended question....
Are you converting an existing system into a media server or are you creating a new one from scratch?
What are you going to connect the media server to? Are you using a wired or wireless connection?
Is this system solely going to be a media server or will you also use this machine for other tasks?

In addition to tiraides' questions:
1) What's your exact budget for this media server?
2) How much storage do you want initially? How much storage space do you want later on? i.e 1TB for now but 12TB in the future or something like that
3) Are you comfortable with Linux or FreeBSD? Or do you want a Windows solution?
4) If using an existing system, what PSU does that system have?
5) When are you planning on doing this media server build?

Was going to just use my existing machine. Its not going to be under heavy use, not a ton of people are going to access it. It was more of existing as a main storage hub for my PS3, ipad, other PCs in the house.
It is on a wired connection to the router and then there is a wireless signal throughout the house.
I've never used Linux, only Windows.
850 watt PSU.
Primarily need a couple TB, nothing major.

I can't help you right now, but please specify which parts (brand/model) you're reusing for this build. Additionally, please tell us the age of the PSU, as there is a possibility that, for long-term use, you may have to replace it.
Also, are you reusing your current version of Windows? (If so, which version?) Or would you rather use a server OS?
