Setting clock to standard speeds?

I originally posted this in the mobo section, but I think this forum is more appropriate. I just finished putting together my new computer and when trying to boot it up for the first time I am having some trouble. The parts are a Athlon XP Mobile 2500+ Barton, Abit NF7-S Mobo, and 1 GB Corsair XMS 3200 RAM. When the computer posts it shows the processor as a 'Unknown Type' running at 600 Mhz and the ram at DDR 200. In the BIOS it should auto detect the CPU type but it doesn't, so I have to let it run how it is or manually define it. I don't know much about clock and frequency settings, so can someone tell me what settings I need to put into the BIOS to run the CPU and memory at its standard speed?

As of right now the options I have in the bios are:

CPU Operating Speed (Choice of User Defined or intervals of numbers XXX(yy) in that format)
--External Clock (If I choose user defined from the above menu)
--Multiplier Factor (ditto)
AGP Frequency
CPU FSB/DRAM Ratio
CPU Interface

I'm guessing I just need to manually define the clock and multiplier, but I have no idea what settings I need with my processor.

the nf7-s 2.0 will not autodetect mobile processors, you will have to define the settings

default for ur cpu is

133
13.5
66
1:1

at the minimum i would use the following for your computer

200
9
66
1:1

before you start overclocking you should read this thread http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=795444

what kind of cooling are u using on the processor btw?

Under FSB/DRAM ratio I don't have 1:1, but I have anywhere from 3:3 to 6:6. Whats the difference between 3:3, 4:4, 5:5, and 6:6? There are also lots in between like 3:2, 4:5, etc.

I'll start with stock for now. How far will the fan I have take me?

its hard to say, ive only tried that hsf on 1.4ghz athlon, 1.0ghz athlon, 1.0ghz duron, and a 2600+ tbred b, but i think with what you have you could reach 2.2ghz with good temps. 2.4+ ghz might be possible, youll just have to try it and see if youre fine with the temps. =)

do you know what prime95 is? you should definately read that thread first so you get a basic understanding of overclocking.

I did read that thread before I posted this topic actually. Its just a lot of it is over my head cause I have never done this before.

ok just making sure so youll know what people are talking about when they give you advice

whats your goal with your system? overclock as high as stability allows? run pc as cool and quiet as possible? or maybe a mix of both? also what kind of temps for the cpu would be too high for you? and whats the max voltage you would want to supply your cpu with? if you can answer those questions and list all the parts you are using, i can write up a little guide for you to use if u want.

I wouldn't have asked, but since you are offering I'll go ahead :D

Part Specs:
Abit NF7-S Mobo
Athlon XP 2500+ Mobile Barton
Corsair XMS 3200 RAM (1 GB)
eVGA 6800 GT 256
Seagate 120 GB HD (don't remember exact specs, 8mb Buffer and 8k RPM I think)
Lian Li PC-65B Case
The rest is onboard and thats what I'm gonna use for now.

I also ordered a Vantec Tornado 92cm Fan and a Nexus Fan controller, but I haven't put those in.

As far as goals, I don't really have any goals. My old system messed up (I think the power supply fried), so I had an excuse to upgrade, which was needed anyway. I play occasional games like World of Warcraft and Counter-strike, but for the most part I just surf the web, do homework, and work on my 3d apps (Lightwave and Maya). I guess being as fast as possible while still being safe and not hugely affecting the life of my components would be my goal, but I don't want it overly loud either, cause sometimes I run it while I sleep.

hmmm the heatsink you linked me to was a speeze cooler, that 92mm tornado wont fit on it easily unless you have something planned out. btw theres truth in the tornado being able to lift cds 6+ cm in the air =)

from what you saiad the max voltage you want to use would be 1.65v (i doubt itll shorten processor life as the cpu is designed to take this voltage) and you will want under 60 degrees under full load (some people consider 60 degrees too high but it is nowhere near the temp where the cpu will self destruct). these settings wont shorten component life IMO (theres no real test or study on how much voltage is safe so we'll use what everyone else uses for the desktop cpu). expect the guide tomorrow if you can wait =p

I can wait for sure. I bought the Tornado to replace the fan on the SLK-9000 or whatever hsf that they used to make, but I guess they stopped and I didn't notice it dissapear from my wishlist. Whats a good utility to monitor all of the temperatures, and speeds and what not? Is that was Prime 95 is for?

to monitor temps we will use "motherboard monitor"
"prime95" is used to stress test the pc for stability

for this guide im assuming you have a athlon xp mobile processor and a nforce2 motherboard with multiplier/voltage/fsb adjustments. im also assuming that you have all your hardware properly installed (along with the drivers) and running at stock settings (very important, as we will be checking the system components for absolute stability first and if there is a problem you will be able to rma the parts before the warranty runs out, if this is a new pc.) (reminder: download the newest drivers for your motherboard and video card at www.nvidia.com. if you are installing newer videocard/motherboard drivers make sure the previous drivers are uninstalled. also nforce drivers should be installed before installing video card drivers!)

the first step to overclocking would be to "burn-in" the components. but before we start stressing the computer you want to make sure it doesnt get too hot so youll need a monitoring program to monitor processor temperature. the program i use for this task is motherboard monitor (it can monitor voltage and fan rpm as well). it can be downloaded here at http://mbm.livewiredev.com/. for this guide, youll want the program to start when windows does. after the installation of motherboard monitor youll have to restart the computer and there should be 2 new icons next to the clock with numbers displayed. these numbers show the processor temperature and the chipset temperature in celsius. for this guide, i will be referring to the temperture of the computer in celsius. if you hover the mouse above the icons it will tell you which number tells what. on my pc my processor temp is red and the chipset temperature is black. assuming the heatsink and fan is installed correctly the temperature of the processor should be under 50degrees at this point of the guide. If not, this problem needs to be fixed before continuing. this could mean 2 things:

1) the heatsink and fan was not installed properly (perhaps you are using too much thermal paste)

or

2) you need a better heatsink and/or fan.

once it is confirmed that the idle temperature of the processor is within a reasonable range the next step to overclocking is to stress test the components. stressing the system will break in the components and any flaky component will usually break at this point. the components we will stress at this step will be the processor and ram. the program used is prime95, it can be downloaded here http://mersenne.org/gimps/p95v238.exe . prime95 will put the system at full load so the processor temperture will sky rocket. while prime95 is running it is a good idea to check the temperature of the processor to make sure it does not get too high (too high differs from person to person. i do not believe high 50 degrees C will affect the longevity of the processor so for this guide we will try to keep the processor temperature under 60degrees C, if you want to aim for a lower temperature you can do so). after installing prime95 run it. in the prime95 menu bar go to "options", click on "torture test", make sure "blend" is selected and click ok. prime95 will suck up a lot of resources so run prime95 when you dont have anything important to do on the pc (it is possible that the system will crash/reset so keep this in mind!). the goal with prime95 is to let it run its torture test without any errors until its stable. the definition for how long the test should be runned before its considered stable is different from person to person but if you can do it for 2-3 days straight i would consider the system stable. i have had prime95 return a error after 47hours so it is not rediculous to want to run prime95 that long. while you are testing stability i will take my time writing the next step =)

if there is a error in prime95 let me know. when i have time maybe ill clean up my posts so i can possibly get a sticky =D
