Seting up my drives

Ok well this is my first time building my own computer. I've built several comps for friends and family in the past and those have been easy but i've run into a few problems with mine.

In the past i've always just installed 1 cd drive and one HDD (IDEs). I would always setup the HDD as the master and the cd as the slave. This worked fine and i didn't have any problems with this setup. On my new comp i'm tryin something different now. I started out with my 1HDD and 1 cd drive config. I've now bought a dvd burner and am a bit confused as to how to set it up. I'm using an ASUS P5GD2 Deluxe board and it has one primary IDE conector and then 2 more in the form of primary and secondary RAID conectors. I also have a second hard drive that i would like to setup on the system.

http://www.levi.cz/image/AsusP5GD2deluxe.jpg the blue one on the bottom is the primary and the 2 red ones are the raid connectors.

What would be the best way to set things up.

Well I think you may have a problem. From my understanding 1 IDE channel only supports a maximum of 2 devices (I don't know if there is a workaround). You motherboard only has 1 IDE channel because of the RAID set-up. They most likely assume you will be running RAID, in which case you would need a SATA drive if I am not mistaken (I have never done RAID). So you will either need a RAID HD or need to discard the old CDROM.

Well i should be able to setup the two HDDs thought the 2 IDE RAID connectors right? If that worked i guess i could put the 2 CD drives on the blue primary connector.
But...I don't know how to set them up in a RAID configuration. Since the 2 HDDs that i have aren't the same I guess i wuold just do a JBOD setup. I dk.

Well I don't know how IDE RAID controller connectors work, but that seems like what would work if you can get it to work. Your two optical drives will need to use the primary IDE connector.

You should be able to do RAID through IDE if you have the appropriate drivers.

Of course switching to SATA harddrives would solve the problem since you aren't even using those connectors.

Here is something on RAID

EDIT: I must be going blind, 'cause I didn't see the other two IDE slots.... :p

Have you read your mobo's instruction manual? There may be a way to edit the BIOS so that you could use those slots as normal IDE slots. You may not even have to use RAID....

You can find the manual for your board in the ASUS website....

ok well after reading and re-reading my manual about 100 times i finally realized that the raid controler was not enabled for the two red ide conectors. So i got into the BIOS and got that baby up and running. So now i can run my two HDDs off of that connection leaving my blue primary connector free. The only problem now is that when i connect my 2 optical drices to the primary IDE windows doesn't boot :( . I don't know wuts going on.

So then i tried switching the two HDDs to the primary ide connector and then the 2 opticals to the red ide connector but, as i figured the opricals don't get detected. I have a feeling i'm doing things all wrong :p .

I'm gonna keep tryin but if anyone has any more suggestions that would be GREAT :D

ok well i just wanted to finish off thie post just in case anyone else my have this problem. I finally got my comp running the way i wanted it to. What I had to do was go into my BIOS and change the onboard device configurations. The porblem was that I had my ITE8212F controller set up in RAID Mode. I switched it to IDE Mode (thx tiraides) and that allowed me to connect my 2 HDDs in the Primary IDE connection(the bottom red one) and my 2 opticals on the Secondary IDE connection (the top red one).
It's amazing what you can learn from a computer manual. Especially the way the information is hiden in them thoughout the book. I must have read 4 diff sentences scatered around the book that if put together would have made a WHOLE BUNCH of sense. Oh well.

Thx for your help guys.
