SETI has not found ET: official
By Lucy Sherriff
Published Thursday 2nd September 2004 15:34 GMT
Astronomers at the SETI@Home project have spoken up to dismiss suggestions that the project intercepted signals from an alien civilisation.

Reports spread across the net yesterday and today after New Scientist said that an "interesting" signal had been picked up by the huge radio telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico.

The magazine quoted Dan Wertheimer, the chief scientist on the SETI@Home project, as saying that the signal was the most interesting yet identified by the project. He remarked: "We're not jumping up and down, but we are continuing to observe it."

Despite the otherwise sceptical tone of the article, his comments sparked speculation that we had actually made contact with another world. Sadly, this does not appear to be the case, and Wertheimer told ther BBC today that the idea of contact was "all hype and noise". "We have nothing that is unusual. It's all out of proportion," he said.

So the armies of the world can stand down - it was all a false alarm. There are no aliens trying to contact or destroy us, and we can all relax again. Phew.

The signal in question is dubbed SHGb02+14a, and has a frequency of about 1420 megahertz. This is also one of the main absorption frequencies of hydrogen. It is also the alien hunters' favourite place to go looking for deliberate signals from extra terrestrial civilisations.

The signal has only been observed on three occasions for about a minute each time. This is not really long enough for it to be analysed properly, scientists say, which means there are plenty of possible explanations for it.

Even discounting the suggestion that it is evidence of some natural phenomenon, scientists cannot rule out ground based interference, or the possibility that someone has hacked the SETI@Home program. ®

They may well have heard John Kerry’s head exploding after Zel Miller’s speech…….. ;)

Or not......

What many fail to understand is that even if we get a signal, and that signal took 100 light years to cross (for example) then by the time we respond and get an answer it would take 200 years.
Reminds me of IT support.

Actually that would be 200 light years for the response ;) Add to that yet another folding project to translate the data.........well, you get the idea. Glad I won't be here for that argument

I think the government is trying to cover this up...

That is what I attempted to state:
by the time we respond and get an answer it would take 200 years.
100 years for the message to get here. (YO! anybody there)
100 years for our response to get there. (Yup, who are you ?)
100 years for their response. (Your worst nightmare)
300 years from the time the first message was sent.
200 years from the time we respond to the original message and get a answer.

So if the little green men leave as soon as they get our message and travel at the speed of light to get here....I still have time to have a few more scotches...right?

Light year is a measure of distance not time, gnewbury just put a number in front to get a hypothetical estimate of the round trip time. That being said even if it was 10 light years that's still a pretty slow communications link don't you think? And the trip there and back would be even worse. I think I'd prefer to let the experts search for aliens and we can stick to folding.

Since, so far, the speed of light is a finite limit, it's both.
Just like MPH over a set distance is a measure of both. ;)
Now stop making me think...it messes with my mixing skills...I stirred this Glen Livet three times instead of two.

What the heck are you doing stirring GlenLivet!!!!
It should only be mixed with air (minimal) and glass, other than the original bottle, if necessary. However the glass molecules will probably mix at such a slow rate as to be negligible.
Pour slowly from bottle to mouth, unless serving others.
GlenLivet should be served at room temperature, an unheated room in the Scottish winter :)
Some actually pour it over ice, but that is a terrible waste.Glenlivet scotch not just a tonic, but a place to visit (map)

But SETI is still a worthwhile project, right guys?

. . .

. . .

right?

. . .

. . .

dammit, Im really ET you know.

Agreed, IF and only if it's 12 years old or older. :D

The young stuff I'll take on the rocks...

Hmm, okay I'll buy that. There is a book out by some scientist (he might be a quack, I don't know, didn't read it) that says we've got the speed wrong or something, but until it's proven I'll stick with Einstein (and relic). :)

On a simillar topic did anyone read this article that Steve posted on the front page? Pretty interesting stuff. Grid computing is the way to go imho.

Yes we know, we just didn't think you knew. :D

I knew, but while stirring the scotch I forgot.
Obviously I need to stop putting ice in my scotch...it affects my memory.

Relic pm me your # again I know this great bar called the pub off 71 south it's has like 50 kinds of scotch .. it's awsome we are going get ready

I'm not going to make it to 50....not the first trip anyway. ;)
You've got PM.

Ugh, you SHOULD add water to whisky, it releases the aroma and taste. It should be water from the same burn that is used in the whisky process itself and never more used than whisky itself. I've only ever managed to drink whisky with the burn water once and that was Glenfiddich, and it was the only time I've enjoyed that tipple!

If you get the chance try GlenTurret, my tipple of choice and available over the web if I remember correctly. Also worth a visit if you are in the area. If you are in Scotland forget the sights, get the Mrs to drive and hit the trail of distilleries though ot will make it a holiday that you cannot remember ;)

I too said that years ago..now it's almost 7 years past that.

The time space continuum seems to go straight to hell after 40 and it doesn’t happen gracefully.

There's BillR back on topic talking about space/ET and stuff when everyone else want's to talk about alcoholic beverages. :p

Does this dress make me look fat?

That's not my arse....I just have to fold my willie into my back pocket.

...so when the boss tells you to go f**k yourself, you actually can?

Alcoholic beverages?

Just what in the hell do you think controls the time space continuum anyway? ;)

Yes...but I am the boss. ;)

Do i look stupid?
I never ask a question like that until I have her firmly tied. :D
