I just received 7950 gx2. I could never get it to work. I called evga tech support and they though it might be the power supply. I am running OCZ Powerstream 520, so I called OCZ tech support and explained what evga told me. I could not belive the response I got from the OCZ tech (Sean) . With out any promting from me he immediately suggested that OCZ upgrade my power supply to one more suitable to my needs  I am a consumer of the highest order. I deal and have dealt with problems revolving around my purchases often, and never have I had a company offer me a better product at no extra cost. A year ago I brough a lemon from Ferrari and it took a team of lawyers just to get my money back. I just wish this level of service was the norm and not the exception. Hat's off to OCZ

Wow, so he just upgraded you from the powerstream 520 to something else at little / now charge? Impressive.

OCZ has top notch support. I had some questions about my powerstream 420 so I sent them an email, and got a great response within an hour.

If your PSU is functioning correctly, then it should work fine with that GPU

I think your confused. He dosent mean compatibility as in will the plug plug into the hole, he means if his supply is sufficient wattage wise to support the card. He couldnt get the comp to work with the card in.

i think dbTelos understands the situation. that psu should be able to power up that gpu. and thats what he meant.

The 520W PowerStream just can't push amperage that you need for the high end video cards like the 7950 GX2, which can draw 20+ amps. That leaves very little amperage for the CPU and other 12V devices to operate on the single 12V rail. The GameXStream (which is basically an FSP Epsilon with OCZ badging + better warranty + lower cost) is a badass unit compared to those PowerStreams, which were great in their day but now overshadowed by better components. An article comparing them is linked below:

20Amps, you crazy? The 7950GX2 uses less power then the x1900xt/x. I would be really suprised if a good 400W PSU couldn't run his system.

Wait... you bought a Ferrari

And yep, OCZ has good customer support.

Oh, I read wrong and thought he was running two of the cards...My understanding is that each card draws 12-15A, while in SLI mode they will draw 20+.

Tech support at evga said that the card draws 28 amps on the 12v rail 520 has 33 I thought it would be fine. When I put in the 7950 the monitor would no come on. This is the first step in trying to correct this, hope its the last :) And the Ferrari was my dream car that turned into a nightmare

Yep, OCZ support is by far the best i've ever delt with!

I had some issues with my ram, basically it would not run rated timings using the 3:4 divider on my mainboard. I spoke with Tony and Joe at OCZ and they got me an RMA, the new ram will be here tomorrow. :D

"Tech support at evga said that the card draws 28 amps on the 12v rail"

I think 454 was right

"More like 10-11A per GX2"

Yet again that is total system power consumption not video card consumption.

If I could afford a Ferrari then I would just toss the OCZ in the can and buy a PCP@C 850w and never worry about running out of juice again. :D

Two video cards in SLI can use 20+ amps, no doubt.

No. The 7950 which you are talking about here:

The 520W PowerStream just can't push amperage that you need for the high end video cards like the 7950 GX2, which can draw 20+ amps.

Does not draw 20+ amps. NVIDIA specs peak power consumption at 143w.

Then your power usage figures you link to here: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/348/11/

Are very clearly defined as being total system draws here:

Testing Procedure

Aside from the components listed above, we had a 120mm and an 80mm fan plugged into the 4-pin molex connectors as well as a third 80mm case fan plugged into the motherboard's 3-pin fan header. We also added our ASUS AGEIA PhysX P1 PPU for more power draw.

Once the system was up and running, we took the Idle wattage and voltage readings while the system was sitting on the desktop with no other applications running. We then ran one instance of Prime95 torture test and 3DMark2006 GPU tests, all while playing an audio CD to bring the system to max power! Once the system heated up and the GPU and PSU fans were running full blast, we then took the Load wattage and voltage readings.

Take note that we are testing these PSUs on an AM2 5000+/SLI system as well as a Intel 965 EE/Crossfire system in order to show real world situations of enthusiast systems, which are what these power supplies are marketed towards.

Xbit has the actual card draw values as linked in the sticky How to buy

Just because you can afford something sould never be the reason you buy it.

I was having issues with my OCZ PC2-6400 Platinum memory in one of the Conroe boards i'm testing and i contacted OCZ and they set me up for an RMA to send me out the new Rev2 sticks which are more expensive at no cost. They also did advanced shipment for me. Any manufacturer that upgrades your hardware at no cost or even just does advanced shipment for a replacement is one of the top in my book. I hate dealing with RMA's where i have to wait for them to get what i sent them and then for them to look it over and send something back to me via some slow ground shipping method.

Back on topic...

As in my last post I had RMA'd some ram.. well they sent me the wrong sticks. I was pissed and spoke with a few OCZ reps, they offered to upgrade me to the DDR2-1000 Platnium set for free for all the hassles i've had. Talk about customer support!!

So should I pass up a used Powerstream 520 for $95 in lieu of a GameXtream 700W? Assuming I will be using an Asus A8N Deluxe SLI with a single (higher end) card for now with the possibility of another in the future?

Oh ya and I'm running a Swiftech MCP655 pump for my watercooling.

yes , the 700 is $109 after rebates at newegg. and future wise it's better to get the 700 than the 520

Is your 520 the one with the blue LED fan (the ADJSLI)?? If so, hang on to it. It might be fine. I think the only thing the 520ADJSLI can't do is quad SLI or X1950 Crossfire. ;)

I've vowed to always buy OCZ until I die because of a similar experience I have had with OCZ's customer service. It's kinda funny how you dealt with "Sean" as he was the same individual I had dealt with ;)

But yes, OCZ in my eyes has some of the best customer service I have ever seen, I only wish other companeis would take after them.

I don't have it yet, the seller says it has the green led

Sean is an alright guy, Jimmy over there also holds it down. Seems like their understaffed, it can be hard to get a hold of them on the phone, but when you do they at least take care of you like pros.

OCZ offered to upp grade my power supply for free. But I just went ahead a bought the gramexstream 700 it did not help by the way. I think its the mother board so I bought the ASUS CROSSHAIR AM2 nForce 590 ,CPU AMD|A64 X2 4600+ AM2,OCZ DII800 OCZ2G8002GK, and a Swiftech Storm Waterblock(going to have to fab a bracket for am2 board nun available right now). Will continue to do business with OCZ because of the great service

Oh. :( Then it's the old 520ADJ and not the ADJSLI. :( Sorry about that.

Was the old board a DFI?
