Hello guys,

I wanted to get an expansion for my current norco 4220, but I decided to upgrade the hardware instead.

What doesn't change :
Norco 4220
3ware CBL-SFF8087OCR-06M 0.6m Multi-lane Internal SFF-8087 Serial ATA Reverse Breakout Cable
PSU: 850w corsair

New hardware :
CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M2A1333C9
GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-UD3H LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
Intel Core i5-4570 Haswell 3.2GHz LGA 1150 84W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80646I54570
3x SYBA SI-PEX40064 PCI-Express x1 Low Profile Ready SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Please note that I don't need RAID cards since I do the raid via software (mdadm).
I will change all 2tb to 4tb.

Let me know what you think, any optimization.

  • Use ECC RAM, not desktop stuff.
  • Use a Xeon
  • Use a non-desktop board that supports the above
  • Use a pair of M1015's and stay clear of the Marvel based cards, otherwise, you may as well buy a bloody Highpoint card.

I find ECC RAM expensive, unless i am not looking at the right place. If I get M1015, i would need to change my actual cables. I am not sure of the benifit from going xeon/ecc since this is used only to storage, I have another rack for VMs and stuff. Thanks for your inputs :)

Well you're already looking at spending a lot since that's a gamer/enthusiast motherboard designed with overclocking in mind. So you might as well change to a real server motherboard designed with 24/7 operation in mind and get yourself ECC support and IPMI at the same time. The prices are very similar (maybe go up to ~$210 depending on what board you choose).

An i5 doesn't make sense for this usage, if you want to go budget go i3 or even Pentium (both support ECC), otherwise get a Xeon.

Those SATA cards won't have great drivers, will likely be slow/unreliable and waste 3 expansion slots. The M1015 or H310 are much better options.

SFF-8087 cables don't cost much either, you can pick them up from monoprice pretty cheap.

I only picked that board since it had 8 sata and supports the new haswell socket.
How about: Xeon E3-1220V3 Haswell 3.1GHz
SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SLM-F-O
and 2x4gb ram drr3 ecc from a place I can find it cheap. I don't know about ECC RAM price, how much should I pay for the above?
and of course 2x M1015 + 4xInternal Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male to Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087)

Should I flash the firmware?

LSI9211-IT seems nice since I have software RAID
