File Server
I have a celeron 366 with 128mb ram and an 80gb hd, I want to use it as a storage, print server, I have a Hp 1210 all in one printer i believe, I am not near it at the time of this posting.
I would like to set it up with linux, running headless and be able to just print. at the moment I am not to concerned about the scanning and stuff off the printer. The file server will be a back up for my website as well as for files my girlfriend and I save, for classes and such. The server is probably going to need to have ssh ability to, so I could work on it from work., and the parts are upgradable,, I would just like a couple suggestions on the distro to use, I am some what a noob but am learning a lot more every day.

Web server
I also have a 1ghz p3 with 512mb of ram and would like to make this into my website server.
it has a 4gb hd and i am looking for a 10-20 just for fun, I am thinking that the fileserver will be overflow for the web server, any ideas on how to do this, and what OS for the web server? I was thinking Damn small linux and Apache w/ php and mysql ????
 
since it will not be doing a lot of processing-intense jobs (file serving does not require processing power by any means) and servers shouldn't need to run x anyway (a big resource hog if you will just connect remotely), just about any flavour ought to do.

my work machine piii-500 now with 384mb ram (originally had only 128 and that was a little tough running x) runs rh3as along with all sorts of services and it does okay. not great, just okay. ditching x would make the world a better place, but it is a regular-use e-mail checking, web-browsing, calendar-reading, "honk if you've got office" desktop too, so x lives. :)



why not just nfs mount the web directory on the file server box? while you're at it, put the cgi-bin there too. that is the approach i would take.
 
I go with FreeBSD and I would recommend that to you aswell. Also instead of hunting for a 10-20 gig, put the 80gig in the Webserver/FileServer and turn the 366mhz into a print server/gateway or such.
 
I have to load the i 810 kernal, but some times when I try and install i am getting a message that the loading of some files fail, at work at the moment, but as soon as I get home I will post the errors
 
May I make a suggestion to use the 1ghz machine for your fileserver and the 366 cele for your webserver? Unless you have some serious bandwidth to serve, the faster proccie on the local fileserver will benefit you more.

I have a 550mhz k62 that is about the end of its fileserving days due to I can only get 45mbit to it reading. I have used my gf's 1ghz machine and I can get almost twice that. It makes a difference when I'm trying to push ISO's to my fileserver.


Other than that, pick a distro, they'll all suit you fine, I just wouldnt install X on the 366.
 
Actually, X and some minimal WM should be a nice place to keep your xterms, and wouldn't use that many resources. It's definitely a luxury, but one I think you can afford.
 
I'd combine the 1GHz machine w/ 80 gig HD into a main server (web, file, and print) and setup the 366 w/ 4 gig HD as a headless firewall/router.

I'd install OpenBSD on the firewall box, and FreeBSD on the main server.

Sounds good to me.
(I'd use FreeBSD on both, but not because it's better than OpenBSD.)
