Server dead, what should I do.

As you can see in my sig, the motherboard in my server started flaking out. The hdd controller will not recognize any hard drives, only optical.

I've become quite dependant on my server to do many tasks and I'm in need of a replacement. I'm considering a few different options. Which one would you do.

1) Replace the motherboard with another Tualatin compatable board. This will probobly cost around $40-60.

2) New motherboard, CPU, RAM, and HDD. Probobly a Celeron D, cheap LGA775 board with decent overclocking capability, 2x512mb PC3200, and a 120-200gb SATA hard drive. This would probobly take me a few months to build up because I have other expenses. It will probobly cost me around $300.
 
Do you need that much hardware power for a server?
What are you serving? Games, printing, files?

I know I do my file and print serving on a p2-400 w/ 192mb ram.
 
No, I don't really need alot of power. But I've been wanting to build a new system for a while :D
 
those cheap dell servers in the hot deals forum are nice, they go on sale for like $249. You'd have a nice warranty on it also.

Damn, I completely forgot about that. I'll try to go dig up that link.

Update: I just looked into the Dell system and I think that building a system for the same price would still be better. I could get the celeron running well over 3ghz, have 1gb of ram, and a larger hard drive.

This is the board I'm thinking of buying as a direct replacement for my current bad motherboard. I think I'm going to avoid the Intel 815EP chipset because of the 512mb memory limitation.

If your serving files just replace the motherboard. My server at home is a PIII 650 and works great. Unless your serving games 3GHz is really just wasting money and parts.
 
Ok...I think I've decided to go ahead and just build a new system entirely. I want to go with a Celeron D, should I get a s478 or an lga775?
