Hey all,

Just wondering if someone could explain why there are desktop CPUs like the Pentium 4 and server/workstation CPUs like the Xeon. What are the differences? How are they optimized for those two categories? Thanks a lot. :)

The Xeon processor is designed to run in pairs on motherboards design for n-way server multiprocessing. The P4 is designed for single-processor motherboards and is intended for use in single-user desktop applications. Xeon-based systems fill a specialized role, used in highly threaded, multi-user situations, like a large database and/or web server. Xeons are also utilized in special workstations designed for threaded digital content creation applications, video editing/compression, 3D rendering, etc. Until recently, Xeon processors had more cache options than P4, but the P4 extreme edition narrows that delta. Another difference is the EMT 64-bit Xeon architecture, which requires special chipsets and BIOS to support 64-bit server software. However, both processors share hyperthreading technology, and I'm pretty sure both use the same 90nm fabrication technology. Xeons are priced higher as well, since they target the specialized server/workstation marketplace. I hope that helped you at least a little bit...

Basically they are the same though.

The Xeons can have more cache, and can be muliti processor capable, but other than that, there is no real difference between a P4 and Xeon. (same can be said for Opteron vs A64) They do use different sockets though, so you have to use the correct MB for each one.

Itaniums, Sparcs, and the like are totally different though.
