I am planning on building a lab environment for creating a VM platform using windows technologies. I would like to get your feed back on the compatibility and recommendations on the following config:

other than a keyboard, mouse and a monitor, what am i missing?
one thing that I want to make sure is that the mobo and CPU and the chassis are compatible. I believe with this mobo and processor, i wont need a powerful VGA card. I am not going to be running demanding games or any of that sort.

the main use of this would to be stand up a set of VMs potentially, Windows server 2012, sql server 2012 and another file server ( all VMs in this machine).

My original plan was to buy some used poweredge servers from either ebay or sites like servermonkey.com. but they all are refurbished, and I want to take advantage of virtualization features in new ivy bridge chips.
my goal is to create a private cloud in this one machine. I dont even know if its possible. any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
 
The X9SAE is more for workstations that servers. It'll work fine, but it has things you don't need, like audio. Also, the 82579LM NIC is not natively supported by vSphere, though there are hacks to get it working. The only advantage I see is that it supports non-ECC RAM.

The CPU is a lot for a lab. The E3-123x line should be sufficient and much cheaper.

Save $25 and get RAM without silly headsinks.

For a motherboard consider the X9SCM-iiF or X9SCL+-F. Each has two NICs supported by vSphere and no unneeded fluff. They also have IPMI remote management. The only real disadvantage is they require ECC RAM, which unfortunately will cost significantly more if you need 8GB DIMMs.
 
The reason i picked the x9sae is that it has the latest c216. Also i could not find an intel c216 mobo. Also, I am not sure if I need the USB 3.0 support from the C216 chipset, otherwise I can got for the C206 or C204 motherboards.

Any reason you're not getting one of Supermicro's prebuilt barebones?
 
USB3 will be pretty useless for a lab box, especially for a vSphere. Don't make any decisions based on that.

FYI, that MB has the same issue of an incompatible NIC, the 82579LM. If you're OK with using only the 82574L NIC or adding in the hacked drivers (there's a thread on here somewhere about it), then cool. Otherwise, consider one of the boards I mentioned prior.

I'm guessing that you you picked DDR3-1333 RAM instead of 1600 on purpose to save a few bucks? Nothing wrong with that, you're unlikely to notice the difference.
