Server build required, please help

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
- I need CPU, RAM, Case, PSU, integrated video card on motherboard, maybe 2 TB drives in RAID
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have? 20" LCD
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC? now
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc. RAID.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit? Windows Server 2008 will be installed

Basically a server pc is required for shared access to file repository so 1TB or 2TB in RAID is ideal
 
Why don't you just get a NAS? Dlink make some inexpensive drive enclosures that can house 2x2TB hard drives, all in for around $500 I believe,much easier then setting up a server with an OS for simple file sharing.
 
Well that wasn't obvious from your first post. How many AD users are you going to have, are you buying CAL's for all of them? Have you thought about buying a Dell 110T server, they are relatively inexpensive.

The Dell T110 is a server tower. If this is for a business, you really should be looking at a prebuilt from Dell or HP. The Dell T110 is a good starting point. This is simply one situation where it would be a bad idea to build the server yourself.

And you didn't answer ashman's very important question: Are you buying CAL's for all four users? And is that 4 users as in 4 accounts or 4 seperate PCs being used by a single person?
 
You say two drives now. Do you plan to increase this number in future? if so to what extent?
Do you want to be able to access the BIOS remotely?

Hmm then there's a bit of problem here: If this is for a business, in order for those PCs to legally connect to the Windows 2K8 server, you need those CALs unless the Windows 2K8 copy you bought already came with CALs. At least here in the U.S, additional CALs are about $30 USD per license
 
As stated, if this is for business and you are not using legitimate software, then I really can't advise you on any solution.
 
IIRC windows server comes with 5 cals as standard if you buy it retail so there shouldn't be a need to buy any seperately unless users have multiple machines. The machines may also already have cals. Frankly I don't think it's reasonable to expect people to describe their companies entire licensing plan for a hardware question.
 
The real descision you need to make is whether you want to risk going with desktop parts or spend a little extra for a proper server motherboard/CPU/ram. This gets you remote kvm, ECC ram, generally higher quality, official support for server operating systems.

I do think it's reasonable in this case:
1) It makes sure that we've accounted for anything that may influenece the budget and therefore hardware choices. I.e the cost of the OS will factor in and there
2) It makes sure that we're not or assisting in violating or circumventing laws or EULAs.
3) This guy is one of our more prolific build requesters. Virtually every other month we can expect this guy to come in and ask for build advice. Considering all the advice we've given him in the past, the bit about the CALs shouldn't be too much to ask for from him.
