So I am going to be turning off the esxi server and installing server12r2. Now here is the problem I have. I have a i5 3470 and a fx8120. One will be used in the server and the other will be used for a backup gaming pc.

What would you guys do?

Use which ever has the lowest power consumption in the server and the other one in the backup gaming rig. Assuming the server will be on 24/7 while the gaming rig wont. If both will be running 24/7, then the Intel for the gaming rig.

With power consumption thrown into the mix, it's a toughie because the i5 will smash the FX in both performance and power consumption but you want the performance for main gaming and lower power consumption for a server. My vote is FX for the server even though it seems backwards. The multithreading strength will come in handy especially if you continue to run ESXi while gaming on the rig.

I was under the impression that two systems are being built. a dedicated server which will use one CPU and a dedicated, backup gaming rig that will use the other CPU.

True yeah, I thought that choosing the FX for the server would have left the remaining chip for the gaming rig, logically being the last remaining chip.

I already have all the parts. It looks like idle power consumption is about equal. The 3470 is lower but not by that much. Under load the power consumption under load isn't even close. But, the server won't be under full load for long periods of time so that really shouldn't matter.

3470 gamer
8120 server

Well if the idle temps are similar and the server will be mostly idle then yes stick the AMD in the server and use the Intel for the gaming rig.
