So a little back history.
I had run WHS v1 for a few years and then I migrated to WHS 2011. Currently I have a pretty nice setup, however I have had a lot of hard drive failings this year and it is time to re-boot and re-tool. So I am looking to put on 2012 Essentials and kind of start from scratch.
Current Hardware:
MSI Z68MA-G45 Mobo
Intel Core i3-2100T
8GB RAM: G.Skill
Lian Li Mini Tower Case
My old configuration:
Main OS: Kingston SSDNow V100 Series 64GB
First RAID: RAID 1 with 2x 1TB WD10EARS
Second RAID: RAID 10 with 4x 2TB WD20EARS
Failure 1:
So first I had one of my WD20EARS die on me so I RMAed it and they didn't have any more so they ended up giving me a 3TB Black Drive, so this left me in a tight spot so I ended up turning my Second RAID into a RAID 5 with 3x 2TB WD20EARS and then I used the 3TB for just a data drive to backup TV files.
Failure 2:
Next to go was my main OS SSDNow drive. This was pretty horrible because I had to re-install the OS and get it all setup again which turned out to be alright, but all I had sitting around was a 80GB laptop hard drive. I ended up RMAing the Kingston drive and they now sent me 60GB SSDNow 300 drive.
Failure 3:
Last friday I had another WD20EARS die in my RAID 5 configuration. So now the home server is completely off.
I am a bit worried and I don't want to lose this data. My plan is to transfer all of my data from my degraded RAID 5 and fully functioning RAID 1 and throw it all on my 3TB drive that isn't doing much. This will basically allow me to start from scratch. So now comes for the recommendations:
1.) Should I use this SSDNow 300 for the main OS drive? It is only 60GB?
2.) I have 2x 2TB and 2x 1TB WD drives now, should I continue with the RAID 1?
3.) I would like to build up another RAID 5 what drives would you recommend?
4.) Should I have a dedicated drive for the server backup?
5.) Should I have a dedicated drive for PC backups?
