Hello,

I am currently working on my Active Directory Certification, and am losing a lot of time constantly having to re-install the eval copy of Server 2008 R2.

I was wondering if it was possible to do a clean re-install then add the drivers, desktop experience, and hyper-v and then capture that VHD (in disk management under actions)

I know once the main Server 2008 install time runs up (30 days or 180) I will have to do it again. But I was hoping I could then take that VHD and it would speed up the installs on Hyper v on several test server/domain controllers the book's labs have me create.

My main goal is trying to stop the eval clock/expiration count down. I am a little familiar with VMware and I know I could just create and image and clone it. Thus, I was wondering if Hyper-v had the same thing.

I have fiddled with the snapshots in hyper-v but am not very familiar with it.

Thoughts or other ideas, suggestions welcomed.
 
you'll probably need a MAKB key if you do not have a KMS server available in your enviroment.

Playing with snapshots and messing with the system time is a VERY bad idea, especially in an Active Directory enviroment. Keep in mind that Kerberos needs the time to be synched between all servers in the AD env or tickets wont be passed along and will cause tons of problems in your env.
 
Thanks guys. Also, this is just to learn A.D. and do the labs from the book. Theres no pressure of a server gets jacked up really bad or anything. This is strictly for learning.

What do you guys think of a Technet subscription...from what I've been reading it will eliminate the activation time period. Thinking combining this with the Hyper V template might be the way to go.

IMO having a Technet subscription is very invaluable, and can pay for itself in the long run.
 
Get a technet sub. you get access to most of Microsoft server and client products and you get serials.
You can use it for testing purposes, however you can't use it for production servers.

you can use it for training not testing. two different things.

You can do testing which falls under evaluation
INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS.

Single User License. Only one user may install the software on your devices and use the software only to evaluate it, even if you obtained a server license. You may not use the software in a live operating environment, in a staging environment, or with data that has not been backed up. You may not use the evaluation software for software development or in an application development environment.

they reworded that some since last I looked then. They used to include test lab in there.
