Server 2008 R2 off Technet?

Ah. I guess I know what I'll do on the 14th.

I just thought it was strange that it would disappear completely. Even 7 had its RCs up until it was replaced with the RTMs.

Can't speak for Technet, but it's available to Volume Licensing now. A week earlier than they previously mentioned.

It was on MSDN yesterday... I saw it when I was looking for something else.

Glad to see I'm not the only one looking for it, thought it might be released with Windows 7 but that doesn't seem to be the case. Will have to look out for it tomorrow.

Waiting for this as well....

Ain't showin' up yet on MSDN. Probably another 2pm EST deal again tomorrow?

I just checked and 2008 R2 isn't available in any form on MSDN. At least under the Subscriber Downloads section it isn't.

Just so everyone knows:

If you go to Downloads -> top downloads you can download using the akamai downloader and is much faster.

'Bout time we got rid of 32bit....

Why do people hate 32-bit so much? I mean for servers it makes sense but on the client side there's just no way that 32-bit is going away for at least a decade. And remember that thing called a netbook that's helping keep the PC industry afloat right now? And if hadn't been for 32 bit my tx2z WOULDN'T be running Windows 7 right now as x64 wasn't working out.

Because it's ancient and outdated? Sorry you had problems with your woefully designed piece of hardware, not all of us do.

A lot of netbooks are doing 4gb of ram now and you'll need to go x64 if you want it all. The unix world has been 64bit for a long time, finally M$ is catching up.

64>32 right?

Seriously tho what is wrong with x64?
What is one reason that you would run a 32bit OS on 64bit Machine? Theres just no point.

Ok sure some netbooks are not 64bit compatible well i bet a year from now that will change.
netbooks today are not what they were 6mo ago and in 12mo from now they will just be cheap notebooks with a different name

notebooks, yes. netbooks, no. 2GB still seems to be the standard there.

Woefully designed hardware? LOL!:D An HP tx2z Tablet with dual-mode electromagnetic and capacitive touch digitizers running a Turion ZM-86 at 2.4Ghz? One of the best machines in its class. Running the most advanced pen and touch interfaces on the planet?Yeah right. Nothing in the *nix world exisits that's anything like this stuff my friend.

You say that Microsoft is just catching up? What about all of those MILLIONS of PC's in service that don't have the hardware to run x64? *nix nuts are always complaining about Microsoft (not M$) grabbing money. So are they supposed to tell all of those people to throw away perfectly good machines? Don't be ridiculous.

There are simply FAR TOO many x86 only machines out there to simply say "oh that's old tech throw it away." No ones going to do that.

Last thing, all the netbooks are the market are x86 right now! They CAN'T RUN x64!!

Nothing in your post is remotely part of the real world.;)

The old machines can run an old OS... problem solved.

Okay folks, let's say it again. There are currenly FAR TOO MANY x86 machines in the world to pick up and throw away just because they're not 64-bit.. x86 is hear for a LONG, LONG, LONG time. It'll probably one day make its way into phones at some point as well. Its a tried and true platform with the largest software in human history. Your OS may be 64-bit, your apps proabaly aren't still.

x86 is still a useful platform. Just accept that and move one. x64 is better but doesn't stop x86 from being good. It's not a zero sum game.

Are you serious!!!! If Windows 7 came out x64 only the *nix crowd would be screaming about how Microsoft is plotting with Intel to force everyone to buy new hardware and then touting how well the lastest 32 BIT *nix runs on that old hardware. YOU KNOW I'M RIGHT!

O god the *nix crowd:rolleyes:

Yea your right that would happen and nobody except for some *nix people would give a shit.

It would make all the XP zealots happy... ;)

Let's not forget that this is a server OS. Any competent business will test their software and buy fully supported hardware; they won't play guessing games when it comes to support. If it doesn't work with 64-bit Windows, then they'll stick to 'legacy' OSes.

It makes sense to release 2008 R2 as 64-bit-only especially considering that many businesses won't upgrade to Server 2008 R2 for a quite a while anyway. 64-bit support is just going to get better over time.

Like QwertyJuan said, anyone still using a P3 can stick with XP32. I personally do not know anyone using a machine that old.

I'm not an expert when it comes to touch systems, I just stick with smartboards and sympodiums, but any machine manufactured in this day and age that can't run a 64bit os, is in my opinion 'woefully designed' or a specialty machine and you have to live with your choice.

Atom cpus are (at least some) 64bit.

Server 2008 R2 is now available on technet plus and I'm downloading it atm
