I have been using Server 2008 on my Dual X5550 setup for months now and have really enjoyed it stability and usability.

I know (due mainly to my attempts) that Server 2008 will not install on Intel Branded P43/P45 Motherboards.

Has anyone tried installing it on the newer P55 Motherboards from other manufactures..
I know Intel Branded boards most likely not work (also no drivers available)

I am having a hard time finding this information on MSI, Gigabite, or ASUS website.

Or am i stuck using server based motherboards to get Server 2008 O/S support ?

08 wont work on intel boards? this is news to me. are you sure that you were not hitting a hardware problem? because i run 2008 on quite a lot of systems with intel boards.

I had problems installing 2008 on certain asus LGA775 motherboards, while Windows Vista and 7 installed without any problems. 2008 just wouldn't boot or install. I assume this is the same issue, in which case, if you don't mind, try an in-os "upgrade", installing vista or 7 first. There isn't a list, as far as I know :(

Also, if there are windows vista or 7 drivers, they should work for server 2008; it's more or less the same underpinnings.

At first it might be a hardware issue too, but after reading some other forums, seem to be a common issue.

I have tried it on 3 x Intel Boards (Used different CPU + SATA drives)
  • Intel BOXDP43TF LGA 775 Intel P43
  • Intel BOXDG41TY LGA 775 Intel G41
  • Intel BOXDG43NB LGA 775 Intel G43

Each time, it is the exact same thing.
It will start the install, but after first reboot to continue, black screen and lock.
Intel states boldly on their support site no support of any Server OS on these boards
(WHS, Server 2003, Server 2008)

Not sure what the issue is, just frustrated I can't figure it out.
There must be something in the desktop boards that is causing the issue.
I have never had this issue from the server motherboards ... maybe Intel did something to now allow that O/S (sounds crazy I know)

Just doing what I can to ensure my future motherboard purchases will not have this issue
My only other option is to use Single Socket Server boards to get around this issue and those are 1.5-2x the price usually.

thanks for this info, i guess i have something to check out. i know it installs fine on a *45/48 chipset but i really dont have to many test boxes with the a g41/43
may have to ask intel for one.

also the P55 boards should be good to go for server, if they are not then i see a huge issue and will have to bitch at some people (they wont listen but at least it would be fun)

That sounds more like a BIOS configuration issue than a motherboard support issue. I'd be extremely surprised if a Microsoft Server OS couldn't be installed on an Intel branded motherboard of any kind.
