Seriously Irritated With Mining Setup

It doesn't matter what slot and how many card are in (unless its only 1) they all are assigned the same gpu number, every time. No matter what, the 280x is always gpu0, and I can confirm this by starting cgminer for gpu0, and physically putting my hand behind it to feel that card getting warm. It's like they have permanent numbering.

I've had card numbers change just from swapping cards around. For instance on one rig the first PCI-e slot is GPU 0, third PCI-e slot is GPU 1. Other rig first PCI-e slot is GPU 1, third PCI-e slot is GPU 0. So you can't assume.

I did, that's happening first thing in the morning as long as I have the cables I need.

I agree. Moving cards around has always changed the order in cgminer.

Every time you get it "working" the cards are in the same location....
And thus the "only" command line you ever used is set up for those locations :)

GPU 0 AMD RADEON R9 200 SERIES
GPU 1 AMD RADEON 7900 SERIES

The one that says GPU 1 is the 7900 series, it is, I mean these are correct. The 7950 is in the top 16x slot, the 270x is in the middle 16x slot with a riser, and the 280x is in the bottom 16x slot without a riser. I'll keep a note of these for when I start moving everything around again tomorrow. Shouldn't the top, primary GPU x16 slot always be GPU 0?
 
See my post above. The top primary x16 slot is not necessarily GPU 0. I've had it be GPU 1 and even GPU 2 before.
 
One cgminer command that might be useful in this case is the "--gpu-reorder" command which attempts to change the order of GPUs based on what slot they are in. So, top slot would be GPU0 and so on. Just thought I'd mention it in case it might come in handy.
 
That's the reason for this whole thread, I want the power to be at least somewhat distributed between the power supplies, I don't want to burn my house down trying to make a few hundred bucks a month. What you are suggesting, is that I run an R9 280x, an R9 270x, an HD 7950, + motherboard, CPU, HD, memory, etc, all off an 850 watt power supply? You're nuts. The 270x is the only one not power by the same psu, and its working fine.

No, not all off the same PSU without undervolting, but you have to make sure the risers are powered by the same PSU as the 6+8 pin PCIe power cords are. As stated for the third time. Try it.
 
Try hooking up all 3 cards on powered risers.

Take the 7950's riser and the card itself and power that off the 850w with the main system (iirc the 850w is doing the main system just now, if not put the 270x on with the system and the 650w)

Take the other two cards/risers and plug them into the other PSU.

Does this work or is this the kind of stuff you've been doing to no avail? Or is it working now? I'm sorry, I've not followed the thread very closely...

Its been hashing away for a bit over an hour with the 7950 and 280x plugged directly into the top and bottom 16x slots, and the 270x is in the middle 16x slot with a 1x powered riser. I lost a lot of cooling by ditching the other riser I was using, but at least its working. Everything is powered off the 850w except the 270x's riser and 6 pins. Tomorrow I'm going to try swapping the power supplies around, if that works with the risers, I'd consider this done since all 3 of my cards are going again, and I'll be back on track for fitting another gpu, maybe 2 without needing more power supplies..

Exactly as I've been trying to tell you. You shouldn't mix and match 12v rails from various PSUs. You should be able to put the other two cards on risers and power those risers from the 850 with the 6/8pin continued to power from the 850.
 
A word about powered risers: do not be tempted to put more than 2 on the 5v lines.

Each powered riser will pull as much as the card needs to make up for what it isn't getting from the pcie bus, and from my measurements that can be up to 75w.
 
I understand your frustrated. All of us have been at one point in this game for sure.
I won't try and convince you not to give up but will make a couple more points about items you seem to misunderstand.
First, spreading the power between two PSUs across the rig is just fine and done all the time.
What is being recommended above correctly is to make sure that all the power to any one individual GPU comes from one PSU only.
So, if you have the cable resources, try this setup:
1) Make your 650W supply the primary PSU (it now controls the 850W supply via the fancy cable you bought.
2) 650W supply is now connected to all MB power input connectors
3) Put your choice of GPU directly into the #1 slot (x16 I suppose) of the MB
4) Connect a PCIe power cable between the primary 650W supply and all 6/8 pin connectors of this first GPU
5) Via powered riser, connect the second GPU to the MB
6) Run all power for this riser from the secondary PSU, 850W model
7) Connect any 6/8 pin connectors of this second GPU only to the 850W supply
8) Via powered riser, connect the third GPU to the MB
9) Run all power for this riser from the secondary PSU, 850W model
10) Connect any 6/8 pin connectors of this third GPU only to the 850W supply
Now you have the power distributed pretty well between the two supplies but no card is connected to both supplies in a bad way.
One GPU and all the MB components on the smaller supply and the other two GPUs on the larger supply.

Now about this statement:
Sorry, but unless I am crazy, that is a total misunderstanding of how the GPUs are numbered.
They are numbered by the system when it detects them. And when you swap them in slots they WILL take on a new number, thus needing a new order in the command line.
If you want, paste your cgminer command line here and we can help you sort through it.
Running "cgminer -n" no quotes and no other flags should report to you what GPU is numbered what in their present locations.

I just finished hooking everything up here exactly as you described, I used the 270x as the primary, the 7950 as the first one of a riser, and the 280x as the last one on the riser. I get an immediate reboot as soon as I see the mouse pointer. I'm trying now without the little jumper in the last pci-e slot.
 
I removed the jumper from the bottom pcie slot, and as soon as I hit the power, the fans on the two cards on risers start up in suicide mode, but it does make it to windows. Once I got in, I checked gpu-z and it was only seeing 2 R9 200 series cards, not the 7950. So I unplugged the other (and last) pcie jumper, and its boot looping again.


I think this is the only way, by using all three of the 16x slots with 16x-16x risers, then 16x-1x for the last GPU (when I buy a 4th one).

Otherwise I'm stumped. Are you sure both supplies are supplying power?
That's the first thing I would check if the system would not complete boot reliably is see if my supply was inadequate.

It's alright, I'm stumped as you are... just sucks because I can't stand when I'm troubleshooting something and nothing is making sense. I'm struggling once again to get all three cards to even boot again. The miner isn't set to run on its own or anything like that. I seriously think it's my 7950 not playing nice.... I started out with two 7950s early last month, and the first one died in barely 3 days. It's a good thing I took pictures of what I had going last night, at least I can get them going again. I really hope those 16x risers work, otherwise I'm at a pretty big brick wall for upgradability, unless I start selling cards and buy all 290x's.

Haha... funny story. I started mining with a gateway OEM mobo, core i5, and these cards. I HATED that mobo since the day we bought the computer, but $500 for a gaming computer after adding a gpu was a sweet deal. That mobo absolutely refused to output any video signal from any GPU other than the onboard one, anytime, unless it was fully booted into windows. It made diagnosing pretty much anything GPU or BIOS related a complete pain in the ass. So when I was moving stuff around and accidently bumped the usb pins with a molex connector and fried the board, I was actually relieve and excited that I had a reason to buy a new motherboard.... Meet the board I'm using, 2 days old lol.

edit: I had these same funky issues with that board too, so I don't think when I fried the motherboard, that it hurt any of the GPU's.

When do I CONNECT OR NOT CONNECT this ATX4P connector????
When I have 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 cards using powered risers??????
When do I start using the 4 pin molex connector on the powered riser cable, after 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, cards are installed??????

You can power the risers from the start, no matter the amount of cards. Do not add the extra power to the board as well as using powered risers, I did that on my very first mining rig and it didn't end well.
 
Ya, I'll echo what nightwalker said... if you used powered risers, no need for extra power on board.

If you're NOT using powered risers, then you should be able to power at least 3 cards before extra board power is needed, unless you start overclocking your cards. Anything over 3 you MUST use extra board power or you take a serious risk of burning out the PCI-E power traces on your board.

For the record, I have run rigs with 3x R9 280X's on non-powered risers them for months... of course, the GPUs are all undervolted and draw less than their average power draw through the PCI-E slot.

But again, if you're running powered risers, the above info is moot. Just hook the power up to your risers and forget about any extra board power.
