Serious problems with my 1900xtx

Hello to the good people here at Hardforums.

This is my first time posting here - but i hope you are willing, and maybe even able to help a newcomer

1½ month ago i bought a Radeon 1900xtx, and all was fine an dandy! The only thing that was bugging me was the loud fan noise. But hey - it was not THAT bad..

Well, new top of the line GFX, means alot of power for, and a reason to try out some of the cool new games out there. And i did - all was fine, and my nwe monster tore though anything i could throw at it.

but time was scarce, and the only thing I played for several hours in a row was WoW.

But then came the demo of Titan Quest! I sat and played for 1-1½ hour, and then!! DISASTER STRUCK! - Thats right, dear HardOCP'ers, something had gone horribly wrong. Behold:

dsc00128.jpg

Dumbstruck with this sight i quickly pressed the reset button, and one minute later i was back in windows like nothing had ever happend.

I thought i was time to test my luck once more in titan quest, so i startet the game right away - but lo, and behold - my computer chrashed again

Reboot once more - and then i got into the game without any problems, played for about 10mins and stopped for the day...

Next day I began to investigate, and i found the following:

When playing highpowered games like:
TitanQuest
NFS: Most Wanted
TES: Oblivion
and so forth

My computer would chrash in the way shown above. Bun in less graphic intensive games lige wow, gta no problems - but i bought the card to play the new games, WITHOUT any problems..

Have you any ideas about what is the cause of this rather fatal error? My PSU is a 510watt one, which is a bit low on Amps, but to my knowlegde that wouldnt turn out like that.. And while my peak temps can reach almost 95°c, that is not unnormal for a 1900xtx (afaik). And the times it went into the games the second time.( after the first chash) my temps was reported to be around 60°c..

I hope you have some good ideas and/or suggestions!!

Gaffy

PS: My specs are as follows:

Chill Innovation 510w PSU
MSI K8N Diamond Plus motherboard
AMD64 3000+, (1.8@2.2)
1bg OCZ platinium 2.2.2-5 pc3200 ram
2 Samsung Spinpoint HD's
1 WD HD
2 Optical drives
and 1 120mm case fan (which sits in a fantunnel, venting the GFX)

Right - its stock speeds..

I too have suspected my Power supply, but as far as i know a PSU lacking power would not show up like that, no?

Oh my God dude it actually looks like a couch coushin!

I'd try switching drivers and stuff. Hell first day I had my XT i needed too. 10 minutes though huh? That would be weird. But I had my first time of driver induced artifacting with mine. I thought it was fuggered. I bought mine launch day though. Actually had the disk version drivers, which was like patched 5.13's to recognize the card while the site had the regular one. I needed to reinstall those. I thought my card was DOA. :p

Currently i have tried: 6.3 6.4 and 6.5 - all with no luck :(

Tho 6.4 was the worst one (but that was generally buggy i understand)

Nearly sig worthy lol
if it were not for the spelling error: cushion

tp OP:

have you measured the GPU temps? Is there such a thing with ATi? It could be overheating. Also, power could certainly be an issue. I have not heard of the "Chill Innovation" brand of PSUs, hence I don't know if they are good or bad.

ps.: OP resizing that pic would be a smart thing to do.

I agree, looks like my grandma's couch. oof.
Power.
Heat.
more ventilation.

See if you can run something like RivaTuner that can monitor the card's vitals and log them ( think you can have it log 'em). You may be able to see what temperature the card is crapping out at. Then you might be able to help things by tweaking the fan profile with ATITool to set the fan at higher speeds at lower temperatures than the stock profile. Might get loud but might help.

I wish ATI would have used the HSF that HIS uses on the ICEQ3 XTX in their reference design. :) FAR less noisy.

I had an issue like that with my GeForce 6800GT, but it was bad memory acc to Gigabyte. I RMA'd it for a working one. It also had that issue at startup, so I'm wrong, it's not like yours.

I haven't heard of Chill Innovation either.

Chill innovation doesnt have a 510 watt listed on their site, so we will use the 520 watt for example it has +12v1=18a +12v2=20a

an x1900xt is recommended 30a, And I know this card won't pull 300+ watts I'm somewhat leary of the specs of this psu. I would opt for a good brand if I were you, seasonic, ocz, antec, etc. check out the psu forums here, guys with allot of knowledge in dealing with them. Going back over the post yet again, makes me lean to not enough power/amps.

The PSU you see in my signature fried my 1900XTX and it is a good PSU, I now own a FSPGROUP|FX 700-GLN 700W and its ATI certified.
The only PC Power and Cooling they certified is the 800 and I can not afford that

Get the ati tool and manually set your fan to 3800rpm.
I am 90% sure that you wont have this problem. It looks like your card is overheating. Could also be bad contact b/w the heatsink and gpu.

Do what those guys said above, also make sure you have good airflow in your case. Install RivaTuner and open the Hardware Monitoring section on the first tab and turn on the logging feature. That way you can check the temperatures upon reboot. You can also put the fan to 100% on the first tab, under Low-Level System Settings and experiment. Sorry about the fan noise, I know.
