Serious Problem With My Computer

Hello all! This is my first post here but I've been coming here to read the forums for a long time. I would really appreciate your help.

My computer is totally screwed. I'm using my parents computer right now to ask for help, that's how screwed up mine is. Even if you don't have a solution please tell me what you think it might be.

Starting around 5 days ago my computer started to restart only when I would play a game. Didn't matter which game. Then after a couple of days it would restart at random times no matter what I was doing. Then starting yesterday it would restart as it was booting up and making it impossible to even see the desktop. I've formatted 3 times, each time the problem is still there but at least I could get to the desktop and use the computer a little bit. I have two hard drives and I've tried on each one to install Windows XP but it doesn't seem to be a hard drive problem because my problem still persists.

Here are my specs:

P4 2.8E 800fsb
Soyo DRAGON 2 Plus mobo
512mb Corsair
PSU 450watt
GeForce FX5700 256mb
SB Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
120gb Seagate Barracuda
40gb Maxtor
7 fans including the heatsink and PSU fans

If you need anymore details please let me know.
Desperate need of some help. Half Life 2 in 2 more days :(

sounds like it's overheating somehow.. or maybe your graphics card is dying or overheating too. i'd feel your heatsink to see how hot it gets. and make sure you haven't overclocked anything.

I haven't overclocked anything. And my 120gb hard drive has just broke for good. When formatting it got to 74% and froze there making a bunch of noise. Then a message came up saying the hard drive was unable to be formatted due to something (forgot what it said). Tried to format the same drive again and it wouldn't even try, giving me the same message.

Tried using my 40gb hard drive by itself and the problem is still there. This is pissing me off.

It could be that your system is underpowered check your 12v rail and make sure its 25A or more. I dont know the exact minimum that your system would run at, but my 2500+ mobile system wouldnt run well with 16A so I bought an antec 480W with 28A 12V rail, now it runs fine. Can any of you PSU junkies enlighen this man on what amount of power he needs?

Yes please someone elighten me. I don't know anything about that 28A rail stuff. My PSU has been working fine since August. Is it possible that it just finally had enough?

it sounds like its probably overheating. download motherboard monitor or some other temp reading program to keep track. Try and use some arctic silver on your HSF

i had the same problem after a few months of using the PSU that came with my RaidMax case. my computer would boot up and everything but it would restart even while browsing the internet. i ran memtest86 to check the memory and everything checked fine. i then continued to ask other people i know about a cause and they told me its either the PSU or some faulty hardware. i took a trip to best buy and bought myself a PSU that day and to this very day about 1 year later i have had NO problems at all except for when i get bored and push my system a little too far but thats another story :D. i say replace the PSU and give us some feedback. sure youll be out about $70-100 but itll be worth it believe me.
