Serious problem with computer...

So my PC had a problem for awhile (well for a year, but I just ignored it until then). When I started it up, the WinXp load screen would appear and start loading, then 3 things could happen :

1. It loaded in 2 secondes.

2. It took like 5 minutes to load then it loaded.

3. It took 5 minutes then the load bar froze and I had to restart.

Sometimes it would just always do number 3. I was able to go in safemode with no problems all the time. Reinstalling changed nothing.

So seing the problem that I had, I tought it was my not so legal version of XP that was not working correctly. So I decided to buy WinXp media center.

And of course with my luck I still get the same problem. Except this time, the first couple of times it did it, I got an error message saying my HDD wasn't "consistent" or something. Anyway it doesn't give me that message anymore, it just freezes now like with the old version of XP.

Question 1: So now the only thing I can think of that is the culprite is my HDD. Could something else cause something weird like this?

Question 2: The WinXP Media Center I bought is OEM. So if I buy a new HDD, I can't reinstall it. But I was wondering if copying an image of my currenbt HDD to the new one with Norton Ghost would work? If not, did I just waste 150$ for nothing?

I formated.

From what I can see the problem is even worst now. It just freezes at the loading bar about 10 secondes in. And Norton Ghost seems to not work in safemode.

I think I'm ****ed.
 
You can reinstall XP MCE with a new HDD. As long as your Mobo, CPU, and NIC don't change, you should have no problems activating windows.

As far as your XP loading problems, run some diagnostic tests on your HDD to make sure its the problem. Try another cable, too. You could also run memtest to test your ram. It might also be a driver issue... uninstall everything then add things one by one. :p

Seconded. Don't worry about the HDD. Windows won't care.
If I remember correctly, MS roughly defines a "computer" as the motherboard. So with an OEM license, so long as you have the same motherboard (even the same model), you can still re-activate.
 
Ok well that's good.

I managed to make it work again by using the repair option.

So far I've restarted a bunch of time and it didn't freeze. I'm going to do some tests in the next week to figure out the true root of the problem. Some said it could be the HDD or the ram or my PSU...
