So I turned my system on today and the monitor (Dell U2142M) just wasn't getting a signal, everything was plugged in, my computer was turning on. It's driving me insane.

I reset and powered on and off and eventually made it to boot screen, it seems like there's a 1 in 3 chance I can actually get a picture to that screen...I Could start in safe mode, but whenever I 'start windows normally' - I get NO SIGNAL AGAIN, and have to restart.

I'm super worried because I have loads of work to do and deadlines, does anyone know what the problem could be? :(

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z68A-D3
Memory: 8.0GB Corsair DDR3 1600mhz

Optical Drive: 22x DVD±RW DL S-ATA
Graphics card: Asus top 670gtx 4gb
Sound card: Onboard 7.1 Audio
PSU: 700W Xigmatek

Just changed graphic card slots and it's turned on... I honestly don't feel that that was the cause of the problem, I just think I lucked out on it going through this time.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?
 
Could be the cable, display, video card, motherboard.
I would put the video card back into the 1st PCI-E slot. That way we can help you diagnose it from step one.
 
I'm getting red dots now on the display, like loads of red pixels and vertical lines flashes up now and again

I installed Nvidia drivers in safe mode, do you think upon booting win7 normally it has like, fucked something up somehow? god I dunno

Make sure you install the newest driver then click on "clean install" in the Nvidia driver install program. You do not have to do it in safe mode.
 
Yeah sounds like a bad video card.

I would try a different input, switch to HDMI or DVI or DP and see if it works.
 
Yeah...looks like the video card is acting up. Got a spare one to try the system with?

Also, make sure your ssd isn't suffering from the stupd 5000 hours bug. Update it to the latest firmware if it has been running for more than 5184 hours. This bug can cause various symptoms.

if you have deadlines you better get a new GPU coming
 
Test the i5 2500k gpu - take your Asus card out, and use your HD 3000 to see if you still cannot get graphics going.
 
I can tell you i have had some very quirky problems with ram in the past, if it is a recent problem refer to the latest thing you did to your machine, if you did nothing, it is either a hardware failure or software failure, things to keep in mind, some motherboards just plain dont like some ram manufacturers and are incompatible, some ram sticks are made as a set of two and must be used together
