Serious Clearance Problem!

I was so close to finishing my HTPC build, when I realized that I simply don't have the clearance for the 2 6-pin PCIe connectors going towards my HD 6950, since they are facing up.

So, I took them out of their casing and connected each pin separately to the card.

But even that isn't good enough!

So now.. I have two choices. Either I solder the cables directly onto metal rods on the card, by removing the plastic casing.

Or I cut the PCIe pins in half, and instead of the usual crimping the wire onto the connector, I will solder it.

Only question is - will the latter even work? It should, right? As long as the wires are touching the end connector, it will work...
 
Ugh, honestly, before I would start doing all that, I'd try finding a card with a different direction 6-pin layout, assuming that would fix the problem, and either trading or selling the current card and turning around and buying the replacement - could probably do so with minimal loss. I believe there are 6950's with rear-mounted 6 pin connectors (I apologize if I'm wrong on that, but I could swear I remember seeing at least 1 version having that).

Just the thought of having to tear apart the casings and do a home-solder job sounds painful, prone to issues cropping up, and definitely warranty ending.
 
Warranty on what? The PSU? It's already up.

I am just wondering whether soldering 14 AWG wires onto a PCIe pin/connector would work the same as crimping them (the proper method).
