Serial to USB convertor for APC SmartUPS?

Got my SmartUPS 1400 running with some new batteries
Anyone ever sucessfully used a serial to USB convertor for running Powerchute? Or is there some better software to use to monitor with?

If you already have the proper serial cable, I see not reason why a USB->serial convertor would not work and may be cheaper than the APC solution. Just make sure the serial cable you use is one of the special APC ones because their wiring is different than a standard straight-thru serial cable.If you are interested in making your own APC serial cable I have the pinout around here somehwere.
