hey guys, my friend just got a new hdd its a Seagate 200gb 7,200rpm SATA 150. He wants to use it as his primary hdd and it came OEM. When he boots up his system it says "cannot read disk, please insert new disc" Can anyone help me?
 
Does it post in the BIOS that it present?

If it doesn't there should be some setting in the BIOS to change that you use both SATA and ATA at the same time.
 
It reads it in BIOS as an IDE drive, but then says it can't read it. since it came oem and he wants to use it as his primary / boot drive should he install the drivers while using an old ata hdd and then will that carry over to the SATA drive? I'm sorry this is probly a really stupid question but I am oober noob to S-ATA :D
 
If he wants to use it as his boot/primary drive when using Win2000/WinXP, he is going to have to install the drivers for his SATA Contoller on his motherboard before he starts the 2000/XP installation.
The drivers for his controller should be on the CD he got with his motherboard. If you tell me what the motherboard is, I can help a little more.
The drivers have to be on a floppy disk, and you press F6 when starting the 2000/XP installation to install additional hard disk controller drivers.
Installing the drivers when using a PATA drive will not "carry over" the drivers.
 
hes using the ECS r480-m i believe. It only came with a CD. We tryed downloading something from their site and putting it on a floppy but it wouldn't read it.
 
i don't know what to tell you.
My NF7 came with a floppy that had the drivers on it.

Get him to go into the devices manager and see if he has a controller installed.

Lastly does it have the latest BIOS?
 
Do a search of the CD for a file called "txtsetup.oem".
When you have found this file, copy the entire folder with it in onto a floppy, and then try the Win2000 setup again.
