Ok so I want a video card to go into this:

Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 @ 2.4Ghz stock | Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H | 2GB 800Mhz DDR2 RAM | Inno3D GeForce 8600GT 512MB | Antec Earthwatts 650W | Windows XP

I want something that will run Rage, Crysis 2, Bad Company 2 and Skyrim at decent-ish settings. I currently game mostly at 1280x720 because, well, the 8600GT sucks, so playing at lower resolutions isn't a big deal to me.

So recommend me something that won't be ridiculously bottlenecked by my CPU! I'm leaning to the GTS450? The GTX460 will probably be bottlenecked and is AU$60 more. I am leaning towards Nvidia because of the drivers being a bit better and stuff. DirectX 11 isn't important since I'm still rocking XP :(

About the only thing that won't get bottlenecked by the E4600 you have there is the 8600GT you already have. The E4600 will be hopeless at Bad Company 2. I wouldn't bother really, I'd just upgrade the entire system when you can afford to do so. Oh, and upgrade to Win7 while you're at it :p

Yeah, I was going to say this but Iw as taking into account the OP not being able to upgrade.

I'd have to agree it's probably time to upgrade some other components. Instead of spending money on games you won't be able to play, consider a new CPU (i3-2100 would be an upgrade, 2500k would be awesome), a bunch of nice cheap DDR3 and a GTX460. Sam didn't mention it, but none of those games are going to perform well on 2GB ram either. I thought about recommending getting the GPU now as a stopgap and upgrading cpu/mobo/ram as soon afterwards as possible...but with 2GB ram it's not even worth it, and more DDR2 is not the answer.

Overclock that e4300 and get a gtx460.
If you have little budget, I agree with the i3/i5 setup. Even the i3 will be a HUGE upgrade and the price of DDR3 now makes it a very reasonable time to upgrade.
