I just bought a logitech z-5300 and an audigy 2 ZS. They sound great. It's no $5k audiophile set but it's good enough for me.

I was thinking about getting better speakers, but that would be an absolute waste of cash. imagine buying an AMD athlon 2500+ then buying a 2600+ 3 weeks later. So if i want to spend more money on sound then the next logical step would be buying head phones, because I live in a complex and i am going to make my neighbours complain if i keep on blasting music all the time.

I was considering buying a Sennheiser HD-600 because the famous bose hater ( http://intellexual.net/bose.html ) owns a pair of them. http://intellexual.net/ht.html

Can somebody please help me. Are there any websites I can go to for information about high end audio and headphones. Any help would be appreciated.
 
The HD-600s are a pretty nice set of headphones. I bought the HD-280s over a year ago and I still enjoy them to this day.

Your best bet is to browse the forums at Head-Fi. They have an incredible amount of information on headphones, amps, stereo equipment, etc
 
The HD 600s are indeed very nice. However, they do need a headphone amp. Consider spending at least 150 bucks for a headphone amp for the 600s. I wouldn't go lower than a pimeta amp....

EDIT: 770th post. Any Beyerdynamic headphone fan would know what I'm talking about. :p
 
i was also considering the Sony MDR-V900 or Sony MDR-V6. I live in australia so it will be alot easier for me to buy a pair of sony headphones. Because the sennheiser dealers in New south Wales are pathetic, eg. www.jbhifi.com.au
 
I recommend the Sony mdr7506/7509 if you are looking for a closed, unamped headphone
 
I recommend you audition any prospective headphones before you buy them. Grado, Beyer and Sennheiser all make some good models.

Personally I prefer the HD580 or 600's.
 
To tell you the truth, the 600 needs a decent system to see much advantage over the cheaper 580. I bet you could get better sound by getting the 580 and spending the difference on a meta or pimeta, or at least a mint.

Or if you can get a Sony cheaper and easier, take a look at the mdr cd780's . Easily driven, good soundstage, and really good overall sound.

If you don't have an amp, pick up the HD590s instead.
 
I've just bought my HD-600. It does sure sound pretty good even without the AMP. My pimeta is on it's way, and it'll sound so much better.

You definitely will need an amp for the HD-600. As I listen to it now, there isn't much bass, and the soundstage is pretty small.

I'm going to return my HD600 though, and purchase the HD-650. I might as well get the better one while I'm at it. :D

Wow, a 650 on a Pimeta...I guess that might could work. And, I knew your s/n was familiar! I've seen you on headfi.

Not really. The 650s are notorious for bringing out the flaws of the other components.
 
damn... so should i just keep the 600s?

I already placed the order, but I can cancel it...but it's a pretty good deal..

$315, shipped. (I paid $260 for the HD600s)

I guess if I decide to just get the 650, I can upgrade to a PPA soon. =)

I was also interestd in buying a headset that comes with a microphone. Well sennheisers flagship pc headset is the pc 150 which wouldn't compare to the hd-600's or 650's at all. Is the sennheiser pc 150 worth the asking price?

The HD590s are good cans. I've not heard a better pair that doesn't need an amp.

On the same token, I'll say the 590s are crappy cans. I've not heard any worse cans than them. :p

They are absolutely craptastic. For the same price you could easily get some Ultrasone 550 Beatmasters...or even the 650 and 700 series(used perhaps).

The thing that I find most ironic is the fact that the HD590s are not all that easy to drive.
 
I can't afford the HD-600 or 650 so for now I'll just buy a pair of senheiser pc 150's (Hey, it has a microphone). And then save up for the HD-650's and an amp.
 
Well CrimandEvil, the z-5300's sound pretty good. When I was watching the movie Tigerland, I noticed alot of distortion (at moderate volume levels), when the sargents were screaming. But besides that , the objects in my room usually start shaking before I hear any distortion. Listen to them before you buy them.

The PC 150's look like good cans to me. 3 metre long cable and a good microphone.
 
It'd be a way better idea to get the best that you can, right off the bat. If you can't afford it now, save up for it and get it asap. It will help you avoid a severe case of upgrade-itis later on!

The reason people haven't commented on the pc150's probably because no discerning hi-fier has given them much thought. My guess is that they sound crappy, but I can't say for sure as I've never used them before.

My suggestion: if you NEED a microphone, buy a seperate one. Think about it....if you put a mic into some cans, what is the main focus of the manufacturing? Design and the mic. Buy the Senn HD650 and a seperate mic.....and you'll definetly need an amp too.

If you want to save money, you might consider buying the AKG K501. Definetly one of my favorite headphones. They have more detail and high end than the HD650, likewise the HD650 has a bassier, warmer sound.

If you are saying that I should buy the best I can afford then I need to get an amp too. it will just take a while for me to save up for the hd 650's or the akg set your talking about, i was just a little impatient, I wasn't really serious about getting the pc 150's.
 
yeah, just pench your pennies, and get what you REALLY want. Don't settle for less than you want, you'll end up upgrading and spending more in the long run.

I'm going to have to side with Harkamus in this case, as far as the HD590s are concerned. Sennheiser's designers in 1998-1999 have really botched up their then-new designs -- big time. (The famous HD600s also came out in 1998 -- but they were an outgrowth of the 1995-era HD580 Jubilees; thus, the HD600s weren't really a new design.) The HD590s are absolutely craptaculacious for their going prices. Same goes for the rest of their "crapponetic" line -- the HD490s, HD500s and HD570s. Thank God that the entire bionetic series is being replaced by the new 2004 HD5#5 series headphones, of which I have just bought and received the HD555. Let's just say that if the HD570s were disappointing replacements for the semi-classic old-style HD545s, then the HD555s would be the REAL successors to the HD545s. (In other words, the HD555s are what the HD570s should have been.)

And the HD555s, like the other new HD5#5s (HD515s and HD595s), are quite easy to drive from even an unamped portable player (though an amp will further improve the sound quality).

Oh, by the way, I've never really cared much for the closed Ultrasone headphones. Nor do I care much for most of the closed headphones at the HD595's price point and lower.
 
PC150's work, that's about all I can say for being a non audiophile. It's a basic headset, comparing to Platronics M90, I have to say:
-cable is thinner, and appears flimsier. I expected something a little more rugged.
-Mic is far better, and would be the main reason I would suggest these. For gaming purposes above music/movie, the 150's are fine
-Back to the first point, they do the job. For about $20 more than the M90's, might as well get a working mic. And that's considering a total price of about $50 for the PC150's and $30 for the M90's.

--I cannot see how anyone can compare the 150's to anything that costs 3 or 5 times as much. WTF is wrong with you? Totally different products.

I bought the logitech z-5300 set instead of the z-560 or z-680 set. but it's not a problem, unless i fork out another couple hundred dollars for no good reason.
