I own a pair of HD-212 pro headphones, I got them a while back for $60. I like them quite a bit, except they get a little uncomfortable after a couple of hours, but the sound is really good. It's a shame that some headphones can sound better than my Logitech surround sound. Anyway, I saw a pair of HD-280 pro headphones on newegg for $100, and I seem to remember these being the default OMG ownage headphones that were the popular default sennheiser headphones. They look really comfortable, and the cord looks a lot more durable than these little flimsey removable things i have now. I also like how it's coiled. I was just curous if anyone feels it's worth the $100 to upgrade. If the sound quality is better, the plastic stuff isn't so flimsy, the cord is better, and it doesn't get uncomfortable after 2 hours, i will seriously consider it. Of course at the end of the day, the sound quality is what i'm going for, so if anyone has had one, or the other, or preferably both for comparison, I would appreciate some insight.
 
well the HD280 BASS doesn't have as much impact as your bass heavy 212pro... but the bass goes lower... but probably very little impact... you're probably gonna regret buying it for this very reason... I am sure!!! but the HD280 does eveyrthing else better.

BUT if you dont mind the headphones being Open... (leaks sound) then I am 100% sure the HD485's would be PUUURRRRRFFFFEEECCCCTTTT for you... has MUCH better bass... cleaner and just as loud... mids are very nice... which on the 212pro's the mids gets knocked back b/c the bass is too overpowering.. and the treble on the HD485 is very clean and nice...


man I am telling you... this is the perfect upgrade from where you are coming from.
 
I do enjoy the bass because I listen to a lot of trance, but i feel my 212's are lacking mids, or as you said maybe they are just masked by the bass. I appreciate the input. I'll give the 485's a look. If I do decide to go the closed route are their any isolated ones that are comparable to the 485's?

Also, what benefit does the openess provide over a closed design like my current 212's
 
check my sig :D I use the Sony MDR-XD400's as my closed cans... these are not as "warm" sounding as my HD485's .. they have really nice balanced sound.. bass is comparable to the HD485's and they also drive better off my audigy 2 ZS..

but they have different sound sonics ..so it's a matter of preference.. I don't see how you can go wrong with either.... I didn't.. that's why I ordered both since I couldn't choose hehe .

O yes, and he openness provides an airy sound.. if ya know what I mean.. It feels like the sound is coming from all around you, instead of between your ears.. but it isn't significant, although most cans that are closed that are in the same price range as an open can is almost always worst sounding.. but in this case, I like both evenly, just gotta stick to one headphone without going back to the other and I enjoy one headphone and get used to it's sound and it is GREAT.

But one thing non-music related is that I prefer the sound of the XD400 over the HD485 for gaming.

And also, if you have sensitive ear, I suggest sticking to Sennheisers :p
