Not exactly. The problem for mature product categories is that other companies have cheapened their versions of those products even more. As a result, everybody's current portable cassette and CD players are "crap".

As for hard-drive-based players, I have no experience at all whatsoever on the current players, so I cannot judge them. It's true that the current iPods have a very short battery life (between charges) compared to previous-generation iPods - but that was due mostly to the use of a smaller, lower-capacity battery in the current models.
that and the iPods have subpar sound quality. If you're going to complain about CD players.

E4gle is probably right I've never personnally listened to these headphones (HD500). Wow, so many posts keep em coming. Oh and cassete sound quality is adequate.. for people with 8 tracks and Beta in thier house.LOL.

Cassettes Rock!! :p

cassettes suck.

CDs are good for home listening. SACD, DVD-A are better for some things. Some things just don't need it though.

Records are awesome for some things too. I have a record player, but no desire for tapes.

That's because most people didn't have the equipment or the skill to produce properly-recorded, high quality cassette tapes. The average cassette recorder that the masses owned cannot fine-tune the bias, EQ or level to match the particular tape in use; it cannot properly record on anything other than the crappy, bottom-of-the-line tapes; it doesn't allow the user to adjust input (recording) levels manually - it sets the levels automatically, and the ALC on cassette recorders is over-sensitive to small changes in the sound level. And pre-recorded cassette tapes - they've been subject to ultra-high-speed duplication, which severely reduced the treble response, making them sound like a big, steaming pile of cow dung. No wonder why most recorded tapes (self-recorded or pre-recorded) sound like a hammered sh*t!

zachary80, when someone mentioned Sony in this thread, I went along with the rant for/against Sony. Sorry, I got carried away there. But this discussion of Sony will stop, as far as this thread is concerned.

And I absolutely hate the fact that some Sennheiser and Grado owners have turned into fanboys. (That is, they've turned into people who try to defend or push their own brand of headphones, and slam the other brands into the ground.)

Back to the Sennheiser topic:
Not all Sennheiser headphones were good. While Sennheiser made some great headphones, they've also made some crap-tacular ones.

And one thing is for sure:

Sony, HD500's and cassettes may suck, but FANBOYISM SUCKS FAR WORSE THAN ANY OF THOSE!!!

Hahaha. indeed.

In fact, I've seen Grado (and to a lesser extent, Sennheiser) fanboyism go way back to the early days of HeadWize during the midst of the Y2K craze.

Let it be known that I am not a fanboy. In addition to my Sennheisers I own Sony mdr7509's and am considering some Shures (for flights).

Don't know how far back the "fanboyism" goes, i suspect it's been around for a while. But Grado and Sennheiser do make some great cans either way. The fanboys however fail to realize there are other companies that make good ones as well.

Careful though, you walk the dangerous edge of sounding like a sony fanboy. *wags finger*

I apologize, but it isn't what it sounds like. Sony does make some good-performing products. But that company also has made more than its fair share of overpriced, underperformance products.
In other words, I like and dislike Sony products on an individual basis. Just as I like and dislike Sennheiser headphones individually.

We all have to admit that Sony and other companies make good headphones too but the point is Sennheiser offers them for a cheaper price. All people who have posted just prefer Senns for the most part thats why they've posted. This thread is not called "Cassettes are cool, Sony owns the world and I like to pay alot more $$ for Sony's greed"

Not all Senns are good performers for the money, either. The really good Senns cost a lot more $$$ than what people want to pay for headphones. And some of the lower-priced Senns actually underperform compared to similarly-priced headphones from some other brands.

That said, although the cheap Sennheiser headphone line is littered with mediocre or underperformance headphones (HD500, HD437/457, HD433, PX30/40, PMX60), it also has a few gems (PX100, the only small portable open-air on-the-ear headphone that comes anywhere close to the famous Koss Porta Pro in overall sound quality).

Nor is this thread called "C4ss3++3s sux0r, S0ny is cr4pz0r", for that matter. :p

The PX100s are nice. Unfortunately they're open, which isn't great for portable use imo.

For that matter, nor are any headphones that sufficiently block outside noises and doesn't go inside your ear canals - most of those are way oversized.

Yeah. I've never been a huge fan of in the ear though. I was given a pair of PX200s. they're decent, and they do alright. I should get some inears, but... ahh. yeah. money

Can we point this thread back on topic please?

BTW, Sennheiser > Beyer. :D

i will take my DT990's kthxbye... :p

sony fanboys are the worst ;)

oh and i dont own a pair of sennheisers btw :)

i owned a pair of sony "studio" headphones that were really expensive... and sucked..

i now own (and love) my BeyerDynamic DT990's and i would not trade them for anything...

Funny cause even the $149 Sennheiser HD555's sound far more natural and accurate then those cans ever will.
So much for you ASSertion that "only if the Sennhesier costs 2x as much as the Beyer" will they not better them. :)

You are correct, Mister X. As a matter of fact, the HD555's are exactly the headphones that the HD570's (which came in between the HD545's and the HD555's generation-wise) should have been.

uhh... no...

just reduce the 14k + bands a little, and the <110Hz bands and they sound beautiful

ass :p

anyway the sennheisers are not comfortable at all compared to the beyers... the beyers feel like they are hugging your ears in softness... the sennheisers feel like they are clinging to your head for dear life... (i have a large head)

Again, you demonstrate how the Sennheisers are better. :p

They don't need no stinking EQ to fix them do they? :D

BTW that is Mister <insert rude comment or name here>
lol

And without that F'ing EQ, the 770 and 990 Beyers have too much bass and too much treble, with little (if any) midrange!
I used to like that sound profile when I was a teenager. But not anymore.

Your <insert four-letter-word here>ing E4g1e

uhh... ok... no either you had something that wasnt a DT990 or something... they have lots of mids... and i have a really nice EQ anyway why on earth would i not use it?

and no matter what headphones i use i roll off the lows and highs becasue they give me a headache after a few hours

Is your DT990 the older 600-ohm version, or the newer 250-ohm version?

My finding that they lack mids applies to the newer 250-ohm version.

i have the new revision, 2x 250ohm... and they sound perfect to me, and ive tried the sennheisers... they are good, im not saying they are not... but the DT990's just sound better to me... does that mean they ARE better, or that other people will agree... of course not... :p

Well... To each his own. ;)

me > yuo

i love you :D

Well, might as well chime in:

I've got Hd570's and Hd650's. I like them both, though of course the 650's get the edge, mostly due to the fact that they cost 3 times more than the 570's, so that's no surprise at all =] I can't say that I've heard the Beyer or good Sony cans though, so I don't have any comparison to throw more fuel into this moderator battle that seems to be taking place :D

Mister X said:
Exactly.... and that brings us right back were this all started.
Sennheiser > Beyer.

My Beyer will beat up your Sennheiser. My dad can beat up your dad.
