hey guys, a few quick questions...

Currently, I have the Sony MDR-CD380's , which are OK for the $65 I payed for.

But, I'm looking into getting new headphones. I'm looking for a deep, dark sound, and I'm only going to use them for listening to music, and playing games on the computer; looking at the following:

Sennheiser HD590
Sennheiser HD580

Will a sound card help the sound of those at all?
Will an amp help those at all?
Both?
If you have any suggestions, please post.
If you have either of these, post how you like them at rate them on a 1-10 scale (10 being the best, 1 being the worst)

headphones: no (don't own them, tried hd580/590/600), but for my uses I would get the 580

soundcard: no (I have a GTXP), but choose between the A2zs and Revo (my choice would be the A2 zs)

amp: have someone build one for you, such as X86Dude
 
I own the 580's and just love them! They are certainly the best sounding headphones I have ever owned. IMO a headphone amp is almost required for these to make them worth the money. I would pick up some 580's, a Revo 7.1, and get X86Dude to build you an amp for them.
 
I'd say 590s. I have them for sale in the for sale forum for 110+ shipping of your choice.

I'd second the notion of having X86Dude build you an amp. The 590s are less amp dependent, so you wouldn't need a really fancy one.
 
If you like a darker sound, then I think you'd like the 580's more than the 590's. Another one you might want to look at is the Beyerdynamic DT 531 While the 580 is laid back well suited for classical, the 531 is more foreward and more suited for rock/pop(they call them "The Groovalizers" on head-fi). The Beyer DT 770's are bass monsters, but the mids are scooped out too much for most music for me.

All 3 need an amp to get the bass out. The stronger the amp, the better.
 
I own the 590s, and they (used to) kick ass (before they died). You don't really need an amp with them as much as you need one with the HD580s/600s; the impedance is much lower. All headphones benefit from the addition of an amp, even the very low impedance ones: the difference is just supposedly much bigger on high-impedance headphones like the 580s and 600s.

Also, you shouldn't get the 600s unless you like spending money: they're essentially the exact same thing as the 580s, just slightly different looks.

This is correct. There are differences between them but many people don't feel the differences are worth the increase in price.

In fact, you'll probably need a $1000 source and a $700 amp in order for the HD 600's to be worth their higher price. On lesser equipment, although the HD 600's don't sound any worse than the HD 580's, they don't sound all that much better, either.
 
I own the 590s.

As was already said, if you go for the 580 or 600 you will need an amp to get the most out of them. The 590s can stand on their own. The 590s also sound "brighter" than the 580 or 600 cans do. If you have the money and plan on being stationary while using them, pickup the 600s (or the 580s, which are, more or less, 600s with cheaper construction) and an amp. If you can't afford both the cans and an amp or want to be more mobile, pick up the 590s. Even my crappy Rio 500 can drive them with no problems.
 
For general listening and gaming the 580's & 590's are overkill. You'll have to add another $60-70 for an amp as well (CMOY or mint if you can find one). You may be better off looking at something like the Beyer DT250's. Too dark IMO, but they sound excellent and can be easily driven without an amp. They're comfortable and closed and sound even better if you ever decide to add an amp. If you like open cans check out the Grado SR60's. For the money these are very difficult to beat. They simply sound terrific... better than 99% of cans that cost twice as much.

An upgraded sound card will depend on what sound card you're using currently... right? The difference between my Audigy and my Revo was night & day. HUGE improvement in audio quality in music. The audigy was better for games, but not much and I don't have to deal with Creative's drivers anymore. That's worth it right there ;)

I have both the Grado SR60's & the Senn HD600's and the HD600's with an amp are far & away better sounding for critical listening, but they also cost 5x as much. For general use like gaming I like the SR60's just fine.

<edit> I just saw where you said you're looking for something dark. Definitely audition the Beyer DT250's. I think you'll like them.

My mistake. A friend's dog chewed up the cans...tore off an entire earcup from the headphones.

...luckily they were my friends cans and I was only trying to sell them on here. ...that's why Iownzya closed the thread.
