Should I spend a $300 on Sennheiser HD600 headphones and drive them from Creative X-FI soundcard?
Is it important to buy a headphone amp?

I am new to the whole headphones thing, but someone offered me these "brand new" for $300 and it seems like a good price.

Beautiful cans, by the way. I don't consider myself enough of a connoisseur of headphones to answer your question from a technical standpoint... What I can tell you, though, is that the Sennheiser HD 570s that I use regularly sound worlds better with an amp than they do straight from that card and I believe their impedance is less than the 600s.
 
The hd600 are supposedly only marginally better than the hd580, which I bought new for $150, until you have higher end equipment (source/amp). My my hd580, amps have made a huge difference. I strongly reccomend you buy one

$300 is too much for those cans at the current market prices. I bought my pair of HD650s (and so did many others) from ebay.... some guy "InetDistributors" sells the HD650s for $310 or so.

I would go 650.
 
The 600s can be had for around $200 mint on HeadFi. They are very good cans IMO. Very tight bass, nice midrange and a treble that is easy to listen to. The 650s are a bit darker. They have more bass generally and are too laid back for some listeners. I loved the 650s out of a nice Singlepower PPX3 SLAM amp. I use a GS-1 for my 600s and the sound is incredible. Inet is a good place to get the 650s from. I got my DT880s from them with no problems.

If you can find the 580s below $140 then I would grab them and get a decent amp. The sound card should be able to power the Senns but they would greatly benefit from an amp IMO.
 
Thanks for the info guys but just to get this straight; should i go with the 600 or the 650? Lets say i'm more into Klipsch type of sound, i have the RF-63 HT system and love every bit of sound that comes out of them.
 
I have a feeling that Sennheiser house sound is very different from that of Klipsch...

Can you go to a store and audition the phones first? I think that Grado or Sony phones may be more up your alley.

Oh, and if you do end up buying a Senn, $300 for HD600 is quite a rip-off.. you can get HD650 NIB for about $320 IIRC. HD600s should be around $250 I guess.
 
come on, if you're new to the headphones scene, why go for something that is a TINY bit better than the HD580 that can be had to half that price. Unless looks is a priority....

and this is ampless too lol. go with teh HD580.
 
I would say to go with the HD580's and buy an amp. If you want a portable amp the V2^2 would be a great choice. I think it would be a waste to buy such nice cans and not have an amp for them though...

If you are considering purchasing an amp, I strongly recommend Mister X, our former moderator. He built me both of my amps; a Pimeta, and my current, a M3 (both for my Sennheiser hd580's). His service is excellent, he is very informed, and he's also a great guy to talk with.
 
Either get the HD580s for 150 or get the HD650s for 300. Also get an amp, it will help alot.
