I am giving up my Grado Cans and moving onto Sennheiser headphones. I am actually trading some SR80 cans to my brother for a Lian Li case. It should work out dandy.

In the mean time; I am looking into buying some new headphones. I live in Canada, so my selection is a bit limited.

NCIX is willing to special order me in some Sennheiser HD497 headphones, the only problem is that they cost $109 dollars. Is this worth it for the cans in Canadian funds?

The Sennheiser HD457 headphones are also available. How much of a difference is there between these two sets of headphones? The price difference is nearly 50 dollars.

I will be using them strictly for listening to music on the computer, (un-amped for the time being), and gaming like Counter Strike.

I am also open to any other recommendations; your help is appreciated!

P.S.-Don't tell me to get Grado cans again; I don't want any.
 
The 457s supposedly compare quite poorly to the 497s so I'd advise against them. I haven't had the fortune (misfortune?) of hearing the 457s myself so I can't tell what I think of them, but the 497s were quite nice for the money. In the US, they usually retail for around $60, which is IIRC just under $100 CAD, so that's not a bad price.

I really need to find a good dealer in Canada. All I have found so far is NCIX, and it is a special order. I am not really too fond of NCIX. Any Canadians know a decent dealer?
 
Im no audiophile but i love my 497's.. just need to let them burn in for quite a while. And from what ive heard there is quite a difference betweent he 457's and 497's. Im not much help though, sorry.
 
The 497's are awesome. I got mine from Amazon a while ago. I dont know if they ship to Canada or not.
 
Wow, it really cost you guys $109 for a pair of 497? Why don't you ask someone you know to buy it for you from here and ship it via Air Mail?

And 457 sucks compared to the 497. The HD202 is better when compared to the 497. I used to have the 202 and then sold it for a 497 and have loved the 497 ever since.

I tried to get Amazon.com to ship it to Canada, but to no avail. The website says that it doesn't ship to my location, or any relevant locations around me. Even after I called Amazon for some support, the closest they could ship the package was two provinces over. It seems as though they completely ignore the Western Half of the Country.

I only live in Saskatchewan...:(
 
Well now, that's bunk!
I can imagine how I'd feel if amazon didn't ship anything to anywhere west of the Rockies.

AVdeals.ca doesn't appear to stock the headphones even though their US counterpart (http://64.39.24.161/headphones/sennheiserheadphone.htm) does. Maybe you could call them up or email and see if they'll send it over.

Their canadian store does have what appear to be good deals on BIC Venturi bookshelf speakers. Just don't buy Pinnacle's from them ;)

It is a real pity that the Canadian Sennheiser site was done so horribly. It is next to impossible to get any customer support, let alone try to find a Canadian Sennheiser dealer that stocks the cans.

I dont see why people say the 457's are that bad. They have been working great for me. I have been using them a few months now and never had a problem with them. They also have nice cloth ear covers and not the hot sweaty vinyl stuff =)
 
Well remember that very often, the best stuff you've heard so far will sound great...until you hear one that's better. That's how people can not mind the incredibly crappy audio equipment most of them live with, they don't realize how much better it can get. So, while on their own a set might sound alright, when you compare it to others around the same price, it's no longer up to snuff.
 
These compare to Grado 80s. They are definately more comfortable! They are also only 32 ohms, so no amp.

My brother is trading me a Lian Li PC6077 for them. It is worth it in my opinion.

The Grado cans were next to impossible to find in Canada, and this seems the same for the HD497s. The Grado's sounded great, but after a while, I experienced "ear fatigue." This kind of turned me away from them. Not to mention they are pretty scratchy.
 
I just purchased a pair of Sennheiser SD280s from www.etronics.com

Put together with my cmoy pocket amp (in its beautiful penguin mint housing ;)) and they sound EXTREMELY good.

www.headwize.com has some good reviews of senns... I'd recommend checking there :)
 
Thanks for the help everyone, now I just have to muster up enough cahones to actually order the things from NCIX. It will be a long wait though, probably two weeks, because they are special orders.
 
Dont buy from NCIX... you would be better off orderring direct from headphone.com

I got my 497s from them just over a year ago and I think in the end it cost me about 120 bucks with shipping and gst included (I live in Edmonton).
 
NCIX has pissed me off in the past. Especially with things they have to special order. It usually takes more than a month, instead of the one or two days that they say. I was just looking for another reason not to buy from them. The rule with NCIX is just to make sure that it is in stock, if not, you are screwed.
