I have a Sony MDR-CD480 head set that is about 14 years old and starting to fall apart. So I just ordered the Sennheiser PC350's on sale for $70 off as a replacement. Knowing that they have an impedance of 150 ohms I was initially a bit concerned. The sound card I have is the Asus Xonar DG with built in head phone amplifier which is supposed to be optimized for 32-150 ohms. So far, so good. Except I am also using the Logitech Z5500 speakers and control pod. The control pod is plugged into the sound card using the optical connection and the PC350's will be plugged into the control pod.

So the question is, does connecting thru the control pod affect the way the sound card amplifier works? Can I expect to have any issues or is all good? Also, one reviewer recommended using "pink noise" to break them in. What is pink noise and is it necessary? Thanks.

Yes. The control pod has it's own digital to analog (DAC) converter in it. When you plug your headphones into the port of the side of that you are using whatever power is available from that unit. Chances are that 150ohm impedance might not work well or be really quiet. (I think...) The amplifier on your sound card is only going to be providing extra power to the port that is labeled as being amplified. (It will not travel through any other devices connected to the sound card)

"Pink noise" is just playing back some random sounds to allow the drivers in the headphones to loosen up. Initially they are a bit stiff and will sound better over time. I'm not exactly sure if there are specific tracks that people use, but I know a lot of people just use normal music at moderate volume for extended periods of time. It isn't necessary as they will break in as you are using them, it mainly just speeds up the process.
 
Ok thanks. When they arrive I'll see how they sound plugged into the control pod. If the sound levels are too low, I'll plug them directly into the sound card.
