Sending WU through a different machine

It's been a crazy few weeks and Comcast really screwed up my cable internet, since we are moving in a couple weeks we decided to just not turn the cable internet back on. Problem I have it that I have WUs that are done and need to be turned in, but the only way I can get online is on campus with WIFI on my notebook. So the question is, is there a way I can grab the finished WUs from my machines at home, put them on the notebook, have it turn them in, and get a new batch that I can distrubute to the machines at home. Thanks a ton guys, I'll try and stop in as much as possible.

Fold on fellas!

Try copying every F@H folder (different names) onto the lappy.. then running each one, one at a time, once you are connected... it *should* work..

Make sure everything is inside of them too.. Work folder, cores etc etc

- Fold [H]ard - - Or go [H]ome -

This is similar to sneakernetting -
Caution - if running Windoze there is a registry entry that should be on the machine that downloaded the WU, and for safety, be on the machine that uploads the WU.
My process involves copying the entire folder and the reg entry from the machine I download to then putting it on the "folding engine" at work. Run the reg entry, run the WU. When done copy all back to original download/upload machine.
Vj does not really like us doing that, because he worries about WU being left out to long. However I've several DRASTICALLY underused non-networked, dual 3+Ghz CPU machines and I generally turn over the WU within 12 hours or less of when it finishes. Which is a lot quicker than my 933Mhz machines at home can do it.

Remember that Stanford records the UserID to which it sent the work unit so you need to edit the registry so it matches the one the work unit was downloaded too.
If its just a one off then do it by hand.

If its more than once then the easy way is to give them all the same UserID and a different MachineID.
That way there is no registry editing to do if the -local flag is used as the MachineID is stored in the client.cfg file if your useing less than 8 clients.
First use the -sendall flag to upload each finished work unit.
Once uploaded delete each folder.
Then set up the lappy like a multi-cpu boxen with the required number of folders.
Then distrubute the folders to the required boxen editing the registry of the boxen to the new UserID so once on line you can just keep going.
Doing that means you can also swop folders around between boxen safely.
Like moving a Tinker from an Intel box to an AMD box so it runs faster, ect, etc.

Luck.............. :D

Thanks a ton guys, I made a reg file for each machine in my network and put them in a thumb drive along with the F@H folders for each machine. Works great and now my machines are back on duty!

That sounds like a lot of work. I'd just set up Internet Connection Sharing and let them connect through the wireless connection on the laptop - assuming you've got an ethernet connection on that laptop as well. It should be easy with a fast wireless connection since I was able to struggle along doing that with a crappy dialup connection for years.

I'm using the school's wifi so I can't really do that. Wish I had a nice neighbor who had WIFI, but alas. This is working for the moment.

I've been moving WU's all ofer the place lately. I just copy the whole mess over, run the client with -configonly to make it happy, then run the clielt with -oneunit flag.

I've loaded up a few boxen with ~4 1/2 to 3/4 done WU's just to get them out the door. Yea it slows the heck out of the existing folding install, but at least Stanford if getting them back.

Tiger, marty -
Do you think it's necessary to copy the registery entry to the host machine (not the machine you download/upload from)?
With the large size of the WU I'm getting I did not want to play around.

On the host machine (the one crunching the WU) as long as it has an ID all should be good. It will have an id from the orginal installation.

From the machine you send it up, worst case is it grabs a new one and makes a big old mess on your official CPU count. I'm sure my is way off from the actual CPU count I have. Personally I'd rather have this off (cpu count) than start moving reg keys all over the place.

You do enough of these and it all becomes a blur, keep it simply on yourself.

I just checked a machine I loaded 4 partial WU's up on and they dumped to the server (at least one one log I looked at)

The ClientID is made up from the UserID, which is stored in the registry, And the MachineID, which is not if the "-local" flag is used.

Now Stanford keeps a track of what WorkUnit is sent to which ClientID.
IF their records are anything like the Clients then they could well store the last 10 WorkUnits sent out to each client ????
If thats the case then as long as you send it back before you download a 10th WorkUnit with that ClientsID then the points will be awarded to you.

Then again they might only store the last one.

But IF you do send a WorkUnit back that they dont have a record of sending out to you the points might go to the Anonymous user and not your user-name.
Bewarned it has happened when people have just cloned the FAH folder in building a big farm and not rerun the "-config" flag to reset the ClientID.

Luck.......... :D

I have swapped F@H folders between systems before with no trouble and got credit for every WU. What I have always done was cut the directory from the machine I needed to move the data from and paste it to another that would work and finish the unit or just send it. I have also done this using a flash drive and just not over a network. I remember doing this a lot when I had my XP1800+ and the other system was just a T-bird @ 1.4. I would sometimes have a gromac on the t-bird and a tinker on the XP and would switch them for the best efficiency.

I've also pulled WUs off a PIII 700 at work and sent them back using an AXP system. I don't remember why I did this but I have done it. There were no problems with that either.

point whore.
;) :D

Kidding!

No but I did see this one thread about this other guy... I can't remeber his name...

Oh and didnt they make a movie.. Look Who's Talking 3?

The reason I was asking about moving the registry entry around is that I got "burned" during the Genome wars, when Stefan reset the stats, and I lost about 1/3 of my total points. Primarily because we had gotten "loose" about "dumping". And there's not much worse than a loose dump.
I will probably play it safe and keep transporting keys.
"Bringin' in a couple of keys,
Don't check my bags if you please
Mr. Customs man"
