The NYTimes took a look at the future of computing: self-aware systems with “greater than human intelligence.” These ultrasmart computers have been dubbed “The Singularity” and the concept has been embraced by quite a few in Silicon Valley.

…Dr. Kurzweil has become a one-man marketing machine for the concept of post-humanism. He is the co-founder of Singularity University, a school supported by Google that will open in June with a grand goal — to “assemble, educate and inspire a cadre of leaders who strive to understand and facilitate the development of exponentially advancing technologies and apply, focus and guide these tools to address humanity’s grand challenges.”

I don't even really need to read the article to say that this wouldn't surprise me if it happened.

Look where we were 30 years ago in computing technology. Look where we are now.

if they defined “Self-aware” the same way “artificial intelligence” was defined when related to a car breaking system that brakes because you became too close to the car in front, then ya we’ll sure have one of those in couple of decades! build something I can have sex then i'll call it Self-aware :D

They called it "The Singularity" only because someone has a copyright on Skynet methinks... :p

Self-aware with extremely low self esteem you mean? ;)

Hey, if I can upload my mind to a computer and live forever, I'll be happy, AI companions or none.

Advance computing concepts AI...might finally help us understand the US Constitution..maybe it could help the masses figure out the part where it says your not suppose to delegate central banking powers to a private bank & call it the federal reserve you guys/gals think?

... yeah, all we need are self-aware computers that come to the conclusion that biological lifeforms are inferior and wipe us out.

Then I see this on the net today and start thinking it's like the intro to Terminator 2 where the Robots and Humans are fighting.

Its ridiculous to try and think as far ahead as 2045 in a field that has huge changes going on all the time.
In the same way that E=mc2 can be used to describe the universe, fundamental and binding theories will be used to describe intelligence.
Once the theories are known, its not hard to code them and they can be self refining.
The limit will be initial coding efficiency and processing power.
My guess is we will have very good algorithms way before 2045 so this could happen much sooner.

I, for one, welcome our new computer overlords. I would also remind them that as a valuable tv personality, I can be useful in helping them round up slaves to toil in their underground sugar caves.

Thanks for that Non Sequitur, Ron Paul.

We need self-aware AI like all of humanity needs a hole in the head. And you can bet your ass it will come to exactly that.

We've each got 7 holes in our heads... go figure (unless there's some deformity or defect, that is)...

Not surprised by this, maybe it will be possible in 2020s or 2030s with this speed of development. One day, the thinking computer will arise upon us :D .

If a computer becomes self aware, it will sit there and look like a stoner because it's processing speed will not be able to keep up with it's thoughts.

In fact, the only computing device fast enough to keep up with thoughts is a biological one. Now if they can engineer one of those...well, it might not work still, seems it took evolution quite a long time before things worked themselves out to get us to the point we are at now, and we don't even know how to use half of what we have.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, there is one other obstacle to it that many here would not even be able to comprehend without so much argument it would be boring to read.

Ahh...someone who pays attention but the reality is the house and senate have already ammended that part with the federal reserve act.

Holy shit. Get out and about more. It will come. I think it is stupid to try and think what will be in 2045.

I'm going to start building Skynet. And whent he copyright people come to sue my ass for calling it that, Skynet will terminate thier asses :rolleyes::p

the only show I tried to watch after prison break and it got cancelled :(
Its a travesty of a travesty

Life goes on, you might want to try :

Kings (on 1st series) Only just found this, pretty good
Californication (2 series so far) superb, very amusing and well acted
The Mentalist (on 1st series) you may like or hate, about a very perceptive man who helps the CBI solve tough crimes, passes himself off as a psychic sometimes.
The Tudors (on 3rd series) just awesome, dont miss!

thanks for the advise Nenu, just a few days ago I found out the public relations manager where I work is a big fan of these TV series, so I took his external hard disk and copied The Mentalist, Jericho, Dirty Sexy Money, Damages, Heroes, and like 200GB of movies :D I’ll pass him what you mentioned so he can have fun torrenting’em :D

Heh...wonder if the riaa visits [H]. You shouldn't evven think about admitting to having 200GB of movies and the word torrent in the same post. :D

Massive computer power does not equal sentience. I dont know if we will ever have computers that are actually AWARE. Artificial intelligences that are not sentient will be along eventually though.
