Sega Genesis Classic Bundle - Sam's Club $39.98

The link in the OP does not resolve if you are not logged in.

Is it one of those 80 game machines?

looks like it also works with the old cartridges as well, if I am reading the description correctly.

I bought one of these for my sons last year... It's cool up until you realize the controllers really suck. Maybe this model's controllers will be better.

Not trying to be a killjoy - just something to be wary about.

For $40 and a 80 game machine that it about what i'd expect.

Yes it is.

Updated the link. Hopefully it works for you

Works now. I bought one from Rite Aid last year. That is a different one than I have because mine does not have Mortal Kombat.

Yes, they are IR so you need to keep them pointed at the system.

Wow, looks pretty cool. Think I might still have my original Genesis controller(s) somewhere and it has controller ports on the front, so I'm guessing I could use those too?

Also, what is the output type on this (composite, component, HDMI)?

Composite only.

Any idea what Composite --> HDMI adapter works best? Seems some are CHEAP and others ~$100

I have no experience with such a device but I can't imagine that it would look any better than it does with the composite cable direct into the TV.

Also, there is only one audio cable, the sound is mono. Not sure if the Genesis was stereo.

my TV doesn't over composite at all. I would need the adapter.

If I remember, the earlier generation Genesis had a REALLY good sound chip, and the later ones cheaped out on the sound chip and it was pretty night-and-day. I would like to know what chip this uses..

It sounds hideous (the video quality is pretty crappy too). It's a cool gift idea but if you have some of the carts it would be better to pick up a used genesis (preferably model 1). There's a lot of reviews up on YouTube so you can observe the audio and video quality. Here's some sound comparisons:

OH GOD. That is terrible. It hurts me to think of how many young kids are going to be experiencing some of the most iconic games for the first times using this abomination!

I am glad it is not just me. The first time I fired up Sonic, I noticed the sound quality was terrible. I am not sure how in this day and age that a decent MIDI synthesizer can cost more than a few cents.

Never looked around the web but I played Sonic so much when I was a kid that I'd know if I ever heard the music off tune.

Hooking up the system to a Sega cd add on gave you stereo sound.

If you had a model one you could get stereo out of the headphone jack on the front with a stereo Y cable, not sure why it was designed like that. The model two had native stereo (but most of them had shitty sound chips). The model three had no stereo and generally sucked overall as it completely lacked support for every add on and had no native RGB options like the other two.

why not use emulator on pc ?

Because opening an empty box that says "Go play on your computer with your friends alone" doesn't really get you in the Christmas spirit of hanging out in the living room with friends and family throwing back to the old system you used to play on ;)

That's just my 02, and the reason I got it ;)

Sort of want one, but since i dont mind collecting systems , i might as well just get a used console from gamestop or something.. but the size factor would be a benefit.

You know Green Hill Zone Act 1 song better then Terminator 2 theme brah?

it looks like it uses multi-game cartridges and original carts as well. did you see the "nomad" that uses sd-cards? http://www.samsclub.com/sams/ultima...aign=rr&sn=ClickCP&campaign_data=prod19080333

These are neat and all, but emulation at this point is basically perfect and can be run easily on just about any modern smartphone, so unless you're a whole different kind of purist you're probably better off paying $20-50 for a really nice bluetooth controller and calling it good.

If you want to play multiplayer.... get a MHL or Slimport adapter (depends on your phone), connect it to your TV, get more Bluetooth controllers. Profit. Chances are it can do anything up to and including the N64 with ease.

I like my Retron 3. A Retron is a better deal then this if you have the old carts and controllers. It also plays NES and SNES and the sound is not terrible.

Emulation is great to play RPGs on your phone on the go but for good old multiplayer with friends you can't beat the old controllers and a TV.
