Seen the new UBISOFT client?

Have you'll seen the new UBISOFT UPlay client? It looks like a stripped down version of Origin. It saves my game codes like Origin and naturally you can download games with it. It has an UPlay shop that just sells UBISOFT games naturally. You can set the UPlay launcher to always be in offline mode after you have done the one time code check.

Kinda neat. Check it out if you happen to own some UBISOFT games and add your avatar's picture.

hmmm, I know it's gonna get a lot of hate here...but that seems neat. Just like an extra place to download your game from that you don't need if you already downloaded/checked the game.

Damn it, another client?

I almost wished there is like a client organizer now. I just use steam, but if there is a reliable program for it, I might split out. Though, I don't know how much I would trust random people with something like that...

So you will launch the game within Steam and it will then open the Uplay client?
Either way, I am fine with it. Ubi DRM hasn't bothered me one bit thus far with the many games that I own from them.

Have you seen the pile of shit in your yard from your neighbors dog? Same thing as Ubisoft and Uplay

Only a matter of time.

Another one huh.

I hope its optional. It would be retarded if all Ubisoft games require it for no reason (other than to promote it of course)

Only a matter of time.

Yup, and people are going to have to get over it. It's not like you'll have to run them all at once since you can only play one game at a time anyways.

I don't like it, but I can't stop it and it's not going to stop me from buying and playing games that I want to play.

What's kind of redundant and bizarre is: Ubisoft still sells on Steam so when you fire up their games you have both this thing running and Steam at the same time.

Kind of silly.

Someone needs to make a client client.

These clients are handy for me as I can buy stuff from Amazon and then use the codes to download the games with the clients. Amazon's downloads don't seem to work outside of the US.

I add them all as Non-Steam Game Shortcuts.
What's nice is that you can now use custom artwork in Steam's grid view for non-Steam games. Now all your terrible non-Steam games can look and act just like everything else in your Steam library.

Good, good stuff.

Yup. Takes that psychological impact down when I commit the evil heresy of not buying a game on Steam. ;)

Perhaps unlike EA, Ubisoft doesn't want to stop someone from purchasing their games on Steam if the user wishes to do so.

If their games goes on 75% sales on Steam, people will still buy it there.

Heck I'm waiting for Settlers 7 to go on 75%:D

Did they get rid of the online requirement for settlers 7? If so I may replace some.of my hatred for Up lay if they did.

The Ubisoft client isnt even on my start menu. It only runs when starting the game. When done with the game close it and its off.

As long as they don't force it on you like Origin, I'm fine with it. If they make it the only place you can buy Ubisoft games, not so much.

This is why I don't buy anything but games that activate on Steam.

Because that really proves and accomplishes something.

Agreed for the most part although I would ideally prefer GOG to be the model everyone emulates.

Yup. Fairly unintrusive thus far. Negligible resource use as well.

I like GOG quite a lot, but it's a very basic service. I'd genuinely rather have the consolidation and in-game features that Steam has, along with the automatic updates. When you toss in Steam Cloud and the integrated screenshot support, you get a pretty nice, seamless experience at the cost of some DRM. To me, that's a good trade off.

Like Trillian for all the IMs some people have. ;)

Unfortunately, I think it might get this ridiculous.

Heh, I think we are on the very fast track to ridiculous if not already.

Maybe an open source company agnostic solution. Hey, if the gamers demanded a good viable one, then companies would be forced to serve through it. Allow Steam, Origin, etc... to just slap on a dll plugin.

I still hate auto updates. Steam's can never truly be turned off. I like defiant007's picture, says it all, except I turn off the "start at boot". Which means I have to wait longer to load a game. Start client, then start game. Which also reminds me, why does steam not allow downloading during gameplay?

For people that play games like CoD and would complain that they are lagging and too dumb to cut off their other Steam downloads. Make it simplistic for the masses and the rest of us just have to tab out and start it back while we play "Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale".

Oops. o_O

I tried once and it wouldn't start back again. You can resume?

I used to just tab out of a game, hit pause, then resume. Since I moved and got this fast internet and 3TB hard drive just for Steam games I haven't done it lately though. Let me try and see if it still works. Hate to tell you something wrong. :)

Well I'm running the Beta version of Steam and it doesn't seem to pause a download at all. So I don't even have to do the trick I described above. Just click the 'Steam" drop down menu and choose settings. There choose to enroll in the Beta for Steam.

It does actually, it keeps all my purchases in one place and allows me to use the most widely recognized client for downloadable PC gaming.

Why would I want EA or anyone else shifting through my computer (as has already been proven they do with their client.)

Eventually we are going to need a backlash for all this crap. How many clients do we need. It is already so annoying when you have sets of clients like GFWL with steam. You need to have all these different accounts etc...

The problem is they need some sort of standard or rules. Think about communication, it has bascially never taken off in computing because every 5 years we have a new hot communication product, the problem is none of them are universal. The end result is that only emails survives year after year and fads like ICQ, AIM, IRC, xfire, facebook, twitter all end up passing because they are all forcing you into their little world.

Reads like an advertisement.

I'd thought this had been shot down as FUD a while back. Have any current source I can look at to research this further?

The data-mining clause was never removed, EA just put in a "we won't sell your information...honest!" note. There is still no opt-out ability either AFAIK.

My biggest concern is the "Always on DRM." If the UPlay client has an offline mode, does that mean the games don't have to be connected to UBi's servers every single second in order to play? In other words, can you set UPlay to offline mode, unplug your internet, and fire up a game? In other words, avoid this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbUl2IcRyIo

If that part has changed, UBIsoft will be off my shit list. I got no problem with 1 time online verification for single player, or always on verification for multiplayer only. I will not tolerate "must be connected every second to play single player" DRM.

Really the language and terms used in EAs TOS is really fairly similar to other services (and I don't just mean gaming related). I don't see how you can nit pick one and not others from an objective stand point.

It is to do with the reputations, track records and current form of the companies involved. It's not hard.

Just needs to verify the activation code once then you can start the game in offline mode from then on.

While this sucks and I'm not defending it in the least, this is the logical progression of DRM.

My only big complaint is redudant DRM. Having Uplay on top of gfwl on top of steam. I've had several titles(mostly gfwl) that just do not work well with steam.

I don't think it will be like GFWL, as it said in the OP. It does a quick check on log-in(first time only?) and then just goes away, unlike GFWL which HAS to stay active while playing the game. And I don't think it will stack, especially not with GFWL, maybe with steam.

I can't think of one game I have or still play that comes from Ubisoft. I wouldn't support them at all until they get rid of their double digit IQ DRM shit. Also, am I the only one who finds it funny/sad that "It looks like a stripped down version of Origin" when you think about it, Origin is a sorry excuse of a clone of a stripped down version of Steam. It's like we are going backwards or something. Gamefly and Gamestop's clients are far superior to Origin and uPlay, and that's pretty sad in and of itself :D

Yup, and people are going to have to get over it.

Yeah the same way I carry around 10 mobile phones one for each network...oh wait...

Pick one platform and stick to it, if you give in and download another platform for exclusives it will encourage developers to increase exclusivity in future which becomes a pain in the balls for us all.

If it ain't on steam I ain't buying it, I passed on BF3 because it was origin exclusive and will do the same for any other origin exclusives, if everyone behaved in this way and picked one platform and stuck to it (and I'm NOT saying steam specifically before the anti-steam fanboys get a hardon) then we wouldn't risk this becoming an issue.
