Seems like BitCoin is becoming mainstream

the general rule for a product to become mainstream is when the government figures out a way to tax it :)

I wouldn't mind if Bitcoin died. Then maybe I would stop seeing Bitcoin trojans popup on my friend's computer and nearly killing his video card.

One he should have an anti-virus.

Two, if its causing the graphics card to overheat then something is wrong and he should deal with it.

Um ya, somehow I don't think Bitcoins factor into your friend's problem. Tell him to install better anti-virus and he won't have a trojan problem in the first place.

Tell him to surf his pr0n with a Linux machine. That's what I.....I mean that's what I've heard works best.

Or when something goes mainstream...that is the first sign of it ceasing to be "cool", and marks its decline and fall.

Because antivirus totally stops you from getting infected. It is like saying having a mop in your closet keeps you from ever spilling anything.

He does have antivirus, and he plays ALOT of games so I already have MSI Afterburner installed with fan profiles set up.

But, he is almost 90 years old and doesn't pay attention to the things that he ends up installing when he has his mind set on getting a game no matter what. So he gets trojans/viruses all the time. But this most recent time with the Bitcoin trojan just irked me alot. Taking two things that I like very much (Video games and Distributed Computing) and making a horrible monster baby.

I can buy a botnet of 10k computers for $20 and run folding@home on them, that does not mean that F@H is the problem, the problem would be that 1) In this hypothetical scenario I would be doing illegal shit and 2) the people don't have proper protection.

In your case you MSI Afterburner profile is set too high if it can cause the GPU to overheat.

I don't know what anti-virus program you use or how you have it set up, but that's precisely what mine does. In fact, any anti-virus program worth anything nowadays has an active scan feature that basically alerts you to anything that matches a virus definition before it can be executed or before any damage can be done. Nowadays, anti-virus scanners aren't designed completely around the knee jerk "scan your system because you already have been infected" type of reaction.

You do realize that's exactly what some trojans do right? Install bitcoin mining software and force infected PCs to mine bitcoins for the author of the trojan. And since mining software jacks the GPU up to 99% utilization, it would be no freakin' wonder that a GPU would start overheating... especially if trying to play a game at the same time.

How exactly does turning the fans up higher cause the GPU to overheat? nothing is overclocked, Afterburner is used for the scaling fan control only. I installed it because he is an older guy that keeps his apartment at 80F.

Sure the Bitcoin program is not the problem, just the people that do this. With Bitcoin being more "mainstream" and it involves money, you will see stuff like this more and more.

I haven't had an anti virus on my computer for more than an occasional pirated software scan in more than a decade.

Fact is you don't get a virus unless you do stupid, risky behavior. It's like nailin chicks without a rubber, most of the time you're fine unless you go bang a drug addict

I agree, but then there are some times when you're on a legitimate site and some douchebag has hacked the ad server and fed a little rootkit or something in through one of the flash based ads. That's one of the the main reasons I keep my virus scanner installed with its active scan component running.

well, there's something I do... I'm aggressive with blocking ads. I unlock adsense usually because those are harmless but specifically flash ads I'm very aggressive on because those are crappy ads

You are entitled to your personal opinion, but for other - less technical - readers of this post: Be careful to consider this statement a factual statement. Risky behavior contributes to the problem, but is unfortunately no cure in itself.

wrt to the original post:
It is very likely that bitcoin will be heavily regulated before it becomes "mainstream"
