seeking webcam over usb

Anyone had luck in connecting laptop webcams over USB with a DIY dongle?

Conversely, are there any good options for a ultra-low profile webcam/mic?

looks like tit wouldn't be too hard and other than that the thinnest webcams ive seen are the creative live cam series.
