-Seeking Assitance- Wireless/Wired Network

Alright, Still trying to get this problem ironed out. My last attempt here for help I got poor replies.

With the problem below, I have tried bridging the connections, when I do this my computer that is recieving wireless signal is no longer able to connect to it.

I have made sure my router is not assigning the default 192.168.0.1 address to any machine.

Please help if you can. If you need more information let me know.

Problem: Trying to network 3 Computers together, to both be able to access the internet from any terminal and view each terminal from another.

Current Network Setup:

I have 2 Computers located upstairs and 1 located downstairs. My Cable modem is downstairs and is wired to a Netgear Mr814 Wireless router.

One of my Upstairs computers has a wireless card installed so that I can use internet upstairs. Also both computers upstairs are connected to each other via a crossover cable. The whole topography looks a little like this :

Cable Modem --CAT5-- Netgear MR814 Wireless Router --CAT5-- Computer #1

--Wifi Signal-- Computer #2

Computer #2 --CAT5 Crossover-- Computer #3

I can get all networked easily, and have done so. I can get Internet on Computer #1 and Computer #2

However I cannot get internet on computer #3, When i try to enable Internet Sharing on Computer #2 I get the error message:

An Error Occured while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled.

Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled.
A LAN connection is already configured with the IP Address that is required for automatic IP addressing.

What is the IP of the router?
IIRC Netgear set the IP of their routers to 192.168.0.1, if it is change it to 192.168.0.2 or something like that.

I stated that I already made sure that the router is NOT using the default IP that you felt the need to repeat.

I really need help but I am finding the lack of useful information displeasing. I thought HForum would be a good place to ask but I keep getting the 'short bus' kids that don't read what my problem is.

I'm not stupid, I've tried most fixes, clearly somthing else is going wrong here...

you might get pissed at me for this, but ahh well here it goes....instead of giving yourself this headache, why not just get a wireless card for PC#3? that will get rid of your issue....or maybe what is the purpose that you are using a crossover to PC#3 instead of just adding a wireless card for it?

It maybe helpful if we broke this down a little bit.

Lets talk about PC's 2&3

PC #3 is assigned an Ip address already? Manually or via DHCP? What address is assigned?
PC#2 is assigned it's addresses Manually or Via DHCP? What addresses are assigned?
There should be 2, one for the Wireless and one for the Ethernet jack being used for the cross-over connection.
Other than MS Internet connection sharing have you tried any other software to share the internet?

Can PC#2 and #3 see each other over the cross-over cable?

Give computer two a static IP 192.168.0.5 or something of that sort on the non-wireless nic. and the same for computer 3.

download this Analog x proxy Install it on computer 2. Set computer 3 to use computer 2 as it proxy and you should have access to the internet. It will take a bit to get set up but just follow the instruction that are in the read me and you should be all set.

The internet connection sharing is a POS if you ask me. The program listed above has worked great for me when I needed to share my dial up connection when I still lived at my parents.

If you have any question post em here I check this forum regularly, hopefully we can get you set up.

I did read your post clearly, in which you said

That dosen't say that you have changed the router's IP address, it just says you have made sure that the DHCP won't assign 192.168.0.1 to any machines.
Why not change the third part of the routers IP address to a different number (e.g. 192.168.10.1)?

Actually you got the correct reply. Bridging. Not using ICS or trying to double NAT. But my guess is your too ignorant, based on this and that post, to figure out what to do without having your hand held.

Well if he read my post then apprently its my fault for being confusing.


I wasn't aware that routers weren't machines... So when I said that I made sure the IP address default of 192.168.0.1 isn't being used, In my ignorance I assumed people would understand the routers IP was changed....

So I apologize, in the world I live in when someone says an IP isn't being used, IT ISN"T BEING USED. Not assigned to a Computer, Router, Hub, Switch, Dog, Cat whatever...

Personally I am confused by his response of changing the 3rd Set of numbers, why would that make any difference? Is there some info I've never read that says Routers need the xxx.xxx.???.xxx numbers changed? Honestly I don't doubt its possible I've never heard of this fix, but I just think trix doesn't know what he's talking about.

In regards to that person that says bridging is the answer, NO ITS NOT

With the set up of machines/routers/cables etc. mentioned above the problem is not solved by a bridging of connections. I mean, sheesh, I tried this so I know for a fact its not working. When I bridge the wireless to the non wireless I am no longer able to connect to the wireless signal. I can SEE the wireless signal, just cannot connect. I explained this above.

Anyways, thanks to everyone who is chiming in with assitance, and please refrain from posting if your not knowledgable in this field or your 'solution' has been tried.

Ok just wondering did you try making Computer 2 the proxy? They way that you have it set up that should work. If my AP was here I would test it but its still in the mail.

Running that analog proxy and setting up comp 3 to proxy through comp 2 worked wonderfully. Took me all of 2 mins to set up.

Got a question for ya Acidtone, do you know why my internet has such problems when using that proxy stuff? Like most sites I can't access... I get Forbidden, not allowed on this server messages...
