First off I would like to thank you in advance for any help and advice.

I currently have a Maxtor 80Gb 7200rpm and a WD Caviar Sata 250Gb, and a external WD 200Gb with a Soltek SL-K8AN2E-GR motherboard. 2 80Gb is ample for me actually as I have multiple OS.


I have a Hitatchi 36Gb 10k ultra320 that I would like to use if it would be beneficial.
I don't have a scsi card and am unclear if I need one to install the Hitatchi. I'd like to be able to set up a raid (I am clueless here also) at some point but I cannot afford to buy another drive right now.

What the best setup for me considering the hardware I do have and what would be the best setup to shoot for in the end and what additional hardware will be needed.

As you mentioned, RAID would require more drives. Most people will tell you that a single Raptor performs on par with the SCSI drives when your comparing single drive to single drive. Nothing will compare to several SCSI drives in a RAID5 config, but your talking an extreme cost. Your also looking at a minimum of about $100 just for a SCSI card that would take advantage of that drive. If it was up to me, I'd probably sell the SCSI drive, and put the money towards a 74 GB Raptor. Then I'd use the Raptor as my OS drive, the internal 250 as my storage drive, and the external 200 as my backup drive.
