Hello everyone,I am at the moment seeking a decent motherboard for the e8400. I been asking around and from what I gather it seems the majority say MSI and ASUS boards are one of the best out there and easy access to overclock with, the only down fall I hear about asus is their customer service sucks, but this is ok.

The type I am looking for does not need to have 2 agp expresses for video/sli/crossfire, I dont need that to be honest and the video card I have is rather decent alone. I mostly have fans for this build and have not upgraded to watercooling (dont plan too yet).

As for the price range I would gander the availability to the amount of lets say $65-$120 and $150 pushing it but could maybe afford it.

I found this ASUS P5K-E mb and would like to get your thoughts on it or if you guys have a different one to suggest?
 
You mentioned AGP: Is your current video card AGP or is it PCI-express? That makes a big difference in selecting a motherboard.

Whoops that was a slip up on my part. I meant Pci express, yeah its the 8800gts pci express card.

The P45 chipset isn't all that exciting. At least not from what I've seen. I've not seen FSB overclocks that were really any better than with previous boards. There are only two features I like about the P45. It runs cooler from what I can see and the 8x8 lane PCI-Express configuration for Crossfire beats the snot out of the 16x4 configuration you got out of most P35 chipset based boards.

Due to all your suggestions and great help these are the few that are suggested and ones that have been found due to looking around. The list below is what I have gathered so far. If it was you what one would you get and or if you had 3 to choose from what ones would be best you think?

ASRock 4CORE1600TWINS <- This board I heard it has a hard time with overclocking.

I think these are p45s.

asrock is french for terrible.

look up the gigabyte ep35-ds3r, and anything p45 or p35. i'd stay away from the 680i. I'm trying to get rid of mine... But I have an e8400 on it, and it works pretty well. I'll have to check out how far I can OC it, but yet it looks like 3.38... atleast that's what I've gotten so far.

I agree. The Gigabyte is a better choice than anything from ASRock. I too recommend avoiding anything based on the 680i SLI chipset. I know the board mentioned above is the 680i LT, but it isn't that much better in terms of reliability than the 680i SLI.

The P5K-e is not P45, the DFI DK P35 is not P45 they are both still good boards tho. None of the ones that you are not sure about being P45's are P45 and I would stay away from all of those except the P5K deluxe which is a good board and the P5E3 which is also a good board but requires DDR3. The Biostar P45 isn't actually a good choice, when you up the NB volts on it it also ups the FSB volts the same amount and it does really loose timings to allow an easier OC but lower performance iirc. I'd also stay away from the low end MSI boards as they are an unknown and low end MSI boards have a history of sucking. The Gigabyte EP35-DS3R is a good choice and so are the P5Q Dlx/Pro but I'd get a P5Q-e over the P5Q Pro (the P5Q-e is the better board, iirc). Hope this answers some questions on the boards :D
 
I noticed on the p5q-e board that it has pci express crossfire for ATI right? Does this mean if I wanted to say go nvidia I could not? I currently own a 8800gts vid card I will be using.

I've got the P5Q-E running an 8800GT in the PCI-E slot.

That will be fine, Crossfire just means it supports running two ATI graphics cards at the same time. The 8800 GTS will run fine with it.
