Security issues with connecting to random Access Points

So I have a question that deals with either connecting to your neighbors wireless router or connection to the hotspot at Starbucks.

In the world of firewalls and anti virus what network security threats are you opening your self up to? If someone is able to see you on the network, and just see that you are using bandwidth what more can they do except for redirect access and look at usage?

Arent all information entered into webpages transfered over an SSL connection anyways.

Shed some light. I could not find many journals online that point to this issue and I would like to hear some expert opinions.
 
You could always use a vpn and have everything encrypted,
Maybe you can use this but i'm not sure if it will work on a non
google wifi.
 
*Opening yourself up to a pissed off neighbor for using what he pays for...it's not too different from going over to his car at night and siphoning gas out of it
*Opening your computer up to possible infection if his computer(s) have a worm/trojan/virus
*If he's crafty with computer..and your computer isn't secured well..he could mess with it
