I found out that there will be a second version of ASUS EAH4870X2 with a new heatsink design.These upgraded graphics cards will utilize a specially designed fansink to effectively dissipate heat away from both GPUs – enabling much more stable performances in comparison to reference designed single fansinks.
I don't know if other manufacturers will start to make some upgraded versions of their 4870X2 too.
I have already built my new gaming rig, I am still missing a new graphics cards, I use my old ATi 1900XT.
I could wait for this 2nd version of 4870X2, so that I would not need start messing with after-market coolers, if I wanted to change the original fansink.

I don't know how long time it will take before these will arrive, there is no information about it on the asus site either.Maybe I could wait for a couple of months, since I am satisfied with the performance of my current hardware.I went from P4,DDR400 to C2D E8600,Patriot DDR2 1150MHz, so that all the games run so much better now with max. settings.
I wonder could I even gain much by a new graphics cards, if my bottleneck was the CPU and memory.I know that people here witness that the GPU is the major bottleneck in gaming.
 
Welcome to forum dont mind the rude people. Prob pre pubescent angry kiddies hehe. By looks of you got all the nice pieces to feed the 4870x2 and it certainly won't be bottleneck. Since you got a nice cpu already do a search here and overclock it to 4ghz at least. There are no non reference cards out yet. Takes ATI couple months from release usually.
 
I'm all for that, looks like a winning product. Already got the visiontek though, and the lifetime warranty still can't be beat as far as I'm concerned.
 
I'm waiting for the 4850x2, or aftermarket/nonreference designs on the 4870x2's. It shouldn't be too long now, and maybe the drivers will be working so I don't have BigCactus' fight when I get mine. Until then, I'll have my venerable 6800GS or a 7800GT to really bottleneck the system in my sig :D :(
 
My card is stable with automatic fan speed, and really quiet. Although it does run at 73C idle and 85C load. If the card burns up from stock temps then I'll RMA it. In the next few months I am going to get an EK block and watercool it to bring my system back to relative silence. As far as temps go, if its hot and stable, why not? Overclocking on this card is pointless so temps shouldn't be too much of a factor.
 
i havent had any issues with mine sure it hits 87 under load on the 2 hotter gpus, but that's not bad


hell my old voodoo banshee years ago ran way hotter all the time, hot enough the heatsink would burn you if you touched it and its still running in my dads old pc like 8 years later.

when you run your cards at automatic fan speed, when there temps get up in the 70's and 80 dont your's smell like they're burning? sometimes i forget to raise my fan speed when i start my comp but after a while i get this burning smell and find out its my card, so im just wondering if thats normal lol
 
well i don't know how hot these 4870x2 (personally) are but if its anything like the ridiculous amounts of heat coming off those 4850 and 4870's (both of which ive had the chance to give a go) then fuck they need to joinup with thermalright to get a working product out the door.. there is NO FREAKING WAY.. these 4870x2 cards are going to survive a hot aussie summer... no fucking way..
 
Yeah it can get pretty hot here in Australia. My friend who stayed in the NT had to get an aftermarket cooler for his CPU even though he was running stock speeds, where he was it'd get to 40-45 degrees C in summer.
 
Yeah, for places where it can easily get to 30c+ in a pc room, Ac should be seriously considered for prolonged use of any kind of electronics.
 
well in reality it hits 32-36 here all the time in the summer, going to a country where low 40 ambient is normal, 6-8 degree's in the scope of 88 under load might push it up another degree or two, the fans are only at like 50% gaming so youd need a hell of an ambient or crappy case layout to make them run over 90 and even that isnt going to hurt them

i think the target fan temp is high 80's, although i do apprecate ati keeping noise to a minimum i wish theyd let use decide if we want more fan speed or not using their defaults as a minimum

Agreed. With 8.54 drivers I notice lower idle temps...some times 59c if ambient tmeps are good. Also I think powerplay should be managed through the video card bios rather than through drivers. I seriously think ati are idiots for letting drivers dictate clock speeds.
 
drivers are fine they just need to put some more time into them

but yeah i think idle should be in my case:
gpu 1 300 mhz
gpu 2 off
gpu 3 off
gpu 4 off

minor load, media player, movies, etc

gpu 1 507 mhz
gpu 2 off
gpu 3 off
gpu 4 off

gaming

gpu 1 750
gpu 2 750
gpu 3 750
gpu 4 750

that would make more sence to me than what they do now
