SECC Cartridge Dissassembly

I have a P2/400 and one thing that drives me nuts is the big black metal thing pasted onto the core. I can see how to remove it, but I need to get behind the plastic behind the CPU. Is there any instructions on how to remove this plastic, whilst keeping it intact?

I see that you are trying to dissassemble a SECC Cartridge, I figure you are trying to get the Heatsink to come off. Just to let you know, if the screws that hold the heatsink on the plastic look like a hex head, you are totally screwed.

I had a Processor like that, I worked for two days straight to unscrew the heatsink. I think they glued the screws into the holes. If you can get the heatsink off you can take off the plastic. At least 4-5 hex screws or whatever they are, is holding the plastic together. I tried a power drill with the hex bit, but no budging the screws, they are fastened in with something.

I have a question though, why do you need to dissassemble it?

I know how I got mine apart... I ripped it apart with my bare hands :D . lol those little buggers aren't really ment to come off, but I wanted to take a peak inside since it was an old 233MHz P2 that had no use...

The only thing about disassembling it, is that you might have trouble with the processor being held properly by the rails on the motherboard. I mean sure, it'll go into the slot no matter what, but it'll get kinda "loose"

Mad overclock, this black piece of steel ain't helping the thermal transfer process.

Let us know if you can get it to run Doom 3!

...or burn down your house, which ever happens first :D

Let me know if this his helpful or not. It's a pdf from Intel that has directions to remove the SECC 2 Cartridge assembly, which might be the same as what you have. SECC 2 is the same as SECC, minus the backing. It does say that it's for a Pentium 2 CPU. Just check out the last couple pages on how they drill out the posts. If this doesn't help, I know there are pages out there that have directions on how to do it. I remember running across them a while back. Almost all involved using a drill. Good luck! :p

Well needless to say i'm kinda too lazy to crack out the drill so I used the old fashioned hand method and voila!:

And so the overclock begins!

 Well atleast *one* of my suggested methods worked! :p lol how do you plan to overclock it? I just remembered I have a P2 433MHz system I bought for $5... A dell optiplex, with onboard 100Mbps LAN onboard audio, ect. I might be tempted to do something with it now! I originally bought it with the P2 233MHz processor, then I bought a 433MHz one for $10 and popped it in. That's why I had the old cpu to mess around with cracking it open.

Unless someone can tell me how to unlock this proc, a mirror lapped NB, a Mirror lapped HSF to go on it, time + patience....al; to get this thing to run at 800mhz or more lol

so uh, was ripping off the casing a waste of time? lol. how could you get it up to 800Mhz or more  I know the motherboard it's in right now supports a maximum of 533Mhz, and when I change the jumper to it, the system doesn't boot...

This is lame we're discussing overclocking Pentium 2's...

Why can't you just go out and buy a Slocket, a P2 cartridge with a socket 370 on it, and buy a coppermine P3?
because you didn't think, you wanted to overclock that processor, but it won't overclock.

But hay we got to see a neat picture of a PIII. :p

It was a learning experience damnit. Sure was when I took one apart just for the hell of it.
