Seasonic VS. Corsair

My current gaming pc has a corsair hx850 powering crossfired 6950 and a 2500k. When I game the loudest fans in my case are my graphics cards and they drown out the noise of anything else which I'm okay with because I have headphones. However, when I'm idling the my psu makes a low humming noise thats bothers me so I was thinking of switching over to a seasonic platinum 1000w to allow me to sli 680s in the future and have quieter idle performance. Has anyone use both the hx1000 and seasonic 1000w and can atest to which one is quieter.

I have an AX (Corsair) 1200 and I have never heard the fan.:D (Seasonic makes stuff for Corsair)

You can look see what I've got.

Have a seasonic platinum 1kK. No issues with noise at idle. Then again all I here are the rad fans blowing since the rad is currently mounted on my desk

my Seasonic Plat 1000w is very quiet, the 2 loudest fans in my case is the video card fan and H80 fans

At low loads (<250W I think) the Seasonic shuts off its fan completely. I ditched my HX850 for a Seasonic X750 a few years back because I hated how loud the HX850 was.

My TX750 was put in the spare parts bin when I upgraded to the Seasonic X750, for the same reasons. I'm currently using it in my home NAS (which was made completely out of spare parts from my PCs and a cheap rig my wife threw together for a university research project a few years back) but it might get put back in the spare parts bin again.

From what I have heard (no pun intended) the newer Corsair units are much improved in this respect.

That low humming noise is probably coil whine, which is inherent with any PSU. Whether or not you can hear it depends on your sensitivity and luck of the draw, since each individual PSU differs in coil whine characteristics. Although, I have seen far more complaints about coil whine with Seasonic PSUs than say for example Enermax.

Yeah the fan shutting off at low loads I feel will make a huge difference you guys talked me into upgrading to a seasonic when I get some extra money

I have a Seasonic S12-600 (I think is the model), anyway, it's a 600 W PSU from 2005 and it's still working well (knock on wood!), no noise issues. I'm using less than half of what it can output (single 8800 video card).

While I only have a Corsair GS600, it is really quiet... alot more so, than the 800 watt Ultra PS that it replaced. But, I only game with a single card, have good ventilation, and don't really OC, so I don't really hear the fans anyhow.

It's only been on the market for less than 2 months...

Your system only needs a 650-750 watt PSU. You don't need 1000 watts.

Yeah but I'm looking to sli high-end Kepler later on down that road but I guess I'll just get it then.

High-end Kepler would still most likely require 750 watts at most, especially with just SB or IB.

I have had two Corsair psus die on me in the last 1 1/2 years. The last one, a GS800, died in 2 months.

Go seasonic.

Their GS line is not their top line. If you want quality, you want the TX V2 series, HX series, and AX series. The AX series, with the exception of the AX1200, are made by Seasonic.

Also, that 5 to 7 year warranty is there for a reason.

For comparison, I have HX650 and X650. X650 is definitely quieter.

I have an HX 850, I agree that for some reason or another it is a bit loud.....maybe the system demands as well.

I have a HX650, TX750, TX850V2, HX850, GS600 and AX1200..........none has ever been a problem, and none are loud, excepting the HX 850 and that's relative.

I also have a couple PC P&C PSUs and they are REALLY loud, if you want loud.:D

They're in a totally different league. One should compare the Corsair AX-series with the gold-certified Seasonic X-series. I would get a Corsair AX750 in your case (no pun intended :p), which is basically a re-branded Seasonic X-760 with longer warranty.

The GTX 680 is rumoured to use 190W (2x 6pin PCI-e adapters), so SLI on those at max load is 380W, add in SB/IB CPU overclocked, some hard drives etc. and you are around 500-650W max load.

If I were you and really wanted to upgrade I'd get a 750-850W high quality unit, probably Seasonic gold/plat.

Not sure how old your PSU is, but make sure the fan blades don't have any dust collected on them. That can actually cause the fan to spin slightly out of balance, causing more noise. Also, make sure the noise is the fan and not the case (of the PSU) itself. I found that adding a sound dampening gasket to the PSU helps immensely in reducing noise (something like this)

^ About the dust comment, I agree, which is why about 2x a year, I open the computer case and air spray all the dust bunnies out of there.

Only twice? I have to give my entire case a dust off atleast twice a month. I don't know why but my room is like a dust magnet. I need an air filter in there or something.

My Season X650 makes a little Ssss sound occasionally if I put my ear directly on it. Very faint but bugging me. Maybe I'm obsessing but anyone know if this is normal?

Thanks

I remember Redbeard saying they don't just get the PSU's from Seasonic and sell them but they add "things" to improve them first. also, Corsair units have better/nicer looking cables.

They don't change the internals, usually, which is the important part. Fans and cabling are what are usually changed.

I actually prefer the cables from my Seasonic X650 to my AX850. The power connector in particular seems to be a higher quality and is much easier to work with.

Seasonic does build the psu to Corsair's specifications, yes but that doesn't mean that they basically take the X650 and improve upon that.

CWT and Seasonic are the main OEMs for Corsair. The AX1200 is made by Flextronics, but it could change over to Seasonic's platform.

Exactly what I want to say. Seasonic X series cable is SO hard.

I have a Corsair HX850, a Seasonic X650, and a Seasonic X1250. The X650 was in a SB rig that I am using for a home server and wanted quiet. I wanted to run under the load that would kick in the fan while folding! It is dead silent, even after 24/7 100% load for 90+ days. Out of the 3 it is my favorite so far. I have to admit the 1250 is nice thus far, but it is new and has yet to prove itself long term under the massive load I am putting on it.

I have central HVAC w/ filters, so I'm sure that helps. Also, do you keep your computer on the floor/carpet? I have mine elevated, on a desk, so that minimizes dust compared to sitting on carpet.

Yeah, having your pc elevated can make a huge difference. My apartment gets dusty too. I won't run a pc without dust filters. I just clean those every few weeks.

jonnyguru said the seasonic platnum was best ever tested by a good measure. If my case could fit it that's what I'd get and I also have a HX series.

One thing I hate about the HX is ugly/stiff ribbon cables.

There was a 750 W modular Seasonic PSU on sale at Newegg for $110 the other day. Seems like a pretty good deal and should be able to run most pairs of video cards.

One thing that slightly annoys me about the seasonic x series is that the branding graphic is upside down. I like the fan pulling cool air from the bottom of the cpu case, but the specs are shown through my computer case window. If I mount the psu upside down, the brand is showing but its upside down. Hahaha. for those of you who do not have a window case, this shouldn’t matter. Its just a small annoyance for me. I like how the corsair ax series have the branding to display properly on both sides regardless of how you mount the psu.

My Silverstone Strider 1KW 80 plus silver is inaudiable even at full load pushing huge overclocks on my cpu (5.0ghz and (900mhz 480's).
This psu can manage a peak of 1130watts! according to johnny guru.
